Think of this combo... XD45 Service w/ bug PT-145.... both 45's. PT-145 has a safety and is the same size as the XD9SC. Also the PT-145 is a DA/SA weapon.... keep pulling the trigger if it doesn't fire. Good luck.

Bad advice...If it goes "click" instead of "bang," you should tap, rack and get back in the fight. Multiple clicks are a waste of time.

If I could do it, I'd have a S&W M&P .40 full size/compact combo.

Copy...not how I read the OP. We train our officers that even with second-strike capability, the chances of a bad round going off on the second strike are slim. Therefore, any "click" when you are in battery gets a tap and rack.

I don't remember the last time I had a misfire with good factory ammo, so I really don't see second strike capability as that much of a benefit.

Tap-rack-reassess works with ALL semi-auto pistols, so you just need one skillset to deal with malfunctions on almost any pistol.

Are XD45 with safeties worth a luck? I have talked to others that say a safety on a duty weapon is a terrible idea, others say great officer safety if firearm is taken.
Thoughts?

I was thinking XD40 Service/XD40SC

Great combo, mag interchangeability and familarity with the weapon. I like the 40 a bit more than the 9mm too, so I just might be biased a bit.

My other option for you would be a Sig 226 in 9mm or .40 and a XDSC of either flavor. The Sig 226 is a world beater in terms of natural point and shoot characteristics, follow up shot accuracy and so on. I have a P228 and P239 combo that I like a lot. The 228 is a tad smaller than the 226, holds 2 less rounds, but the same ergonomics. They are hard to beat. I like the XD and all, but the Sig is just world class!

I carried one kind or another of the 1911 .45 for 20 years in law enforcement and it served me well. However, with the newer hi-cap pistols, I think that may very well be the way to go. I just picked up the new XDm .40 and am very impressed...16+1 with another 32 rounds on the duty belt, and the .40's a proven man stopper with the proper ammo. The only problem right now is finding a holster to fit, but I'm sure the big holster makers are already working on it. As far as the BUG, find something that is comfortable to carry and conceal, that you can shoot well, and nothing less than .380. Even the .380 is marginal, but with the advances in bullet technology it is approaching .38 Special performance. I have a little "Elsie Pea" (Ruger LCP) and at 7 yards she'll dump 'em all in the head. Extremely easy to conceal in even a shirt pocket, but safer in a pocket holster that covers the trigger guard. With Hydra-shocks or Gold Dots I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end. Good luck, keep your head down, and come back safely!!!!!!
