Officer Down
On 6/15 our department received a report of a subject seen drinking and then driving away with an infant in the car. We responded to the area and could not locate the vehicle, however we put out a local BOL for the vehicle.
Yolo County Deputy Sheriff Jose "Tony" Diaz located the vehicle and initiated a vehicle stop. The suspect, a parolee at large, came out shooting with a .223 rifle, hitting Tony once in the chest. Tony was able to return fire but did not hit the suspect (unknown distance) as the suspect fled. Tony put out his own 11-99 and stated that he would not be pursuing the suspect because he would be standing by with the 4mo old infant the suspect had abandoned in the car. When Tony's cover units arrived, he told them he thought he had been hit. They checked him but could not find a wound. A few minutes later, Tony again said he thought he had been shot and that he felt as if he was going to pass out. Tony's partners stripped off his shirt and vest and found the wound. Medical aid was started and Tony was helicoptered to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Tony left behind a fiance, three daughters, five step-children and inumerable friends. The suspect was taken into custody without incident (I wasn't there for the capture) after an 18 hour manhunt. Deputy Sheriff Jose Antonio (Tony) Diaz, Yolo County Sheriff's Department Rest easy, Tony...we'll take your beat from here.
