It always tears me up to hear that a brother in blue went down. Thanks for your service and God bless.

Did they find the guy? After killing a fellow officer it would be hard not to shoot him on the spot.

Very sad indeed, obviously a good cop, as he protected the infant while he stood unknowingly dieing.

I hope there is no mercy for the suspect.

Yolo County Deputy Sheriff Jose "Tony" Diaz located the vehicle and initiated a vehicle stop. The suspect, a parolee at large, came out shooting with a .223 rifle, hitting Tony once in the chest. Tony was able to return fire but did not hit the suspect (unknown distance) as the suspect fled. Tony put out his own 11-99 and stated that he would not be pursuing the suspect because he would be standing by with the 4mo old infant the suspect had abandoned in the car. When Tony's cover units arrived, he told them he thought he had been hit. They checked him but could not find a wound. A few minutes later, Tony again said he thought he had been shot and that he felt as if he was going to pass out. Tony's partners stripped off his shirt and vest and found the wound. Medical aid was started and Tony was helicoptered to the nearest hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Tony left behind a fiance, three daughters, five step-children and inumerable friends.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident (I wasn't there for the capture) after an 18 hour manhunt.

Deputy Sheriff Jose Antonio (Tony) Diaz, Yolo County Sheriff's Department

Rest easy, Tony...we'll take your beat from here.
I hate to hear this. God Speed.

damn it

I always hate to hear about the loss of a brother in blue. We need to start wearing rifle lever armor. It seems like assaults with rifles are on the rise.

My prayers are with the family
