I remember my 1st 5 years on the job and it was the time of my life. This is just my prospective, but might different in other parts of this country.
Good luck with your progress on becoming an L.E.O.
I love being a cop. I think it depends on where you are. i know I would not want to work in Chicago. I hate large cities. My hat is off to you for working there. Stay safe.

Thanks for the responses and support guys!

I turned in my first application yesterday! It was for my home town's Police Department, which is actually my second choice. My first choice is the county sheriff's office, and that application is due by the end of the month.

Looking forward to getting my entrance exam scores, fortunately both departments I am initially applying with accept proof of taking the test (the receipt) if the results are still pending. I would be really shocked if I get more than one or two questions wrong -- I know I got one math section question wrong, but that should be it.

Thanks for the interview advice Alaskapopo! Fortunately I was raised right and appropriate dress and "sir" or "ma'am" is as natural as breathing. I am really looking forward to any interviews, as that is where I really shine!

Scotty,

Looks like you're on your way. Congrats, I'm sure everything will work out fine for you. There is nothing wrong with wanting to serve, and a police officer (in any capacity) is a fine way of doing it, and having a sense of pride in their community.

This is the profession my youngest son is choosing, he's already a member of the Police Explorers.

99% is a really good score. I think I got 89% on my test a few months ago.

I have officially applied to 2 local city PDs and the County Sheriff's Office.

Let the waiting game begin!

Congrats on the score and good luck with your quest. It takes special people to be LEOs and we need people with a desire for something other than a good, steady job with benefits to fill the positions.

It take a lot of dedication and a love for serving people to be a LEO and I'm sure that you've gone over the pros and cons dozens of times by now. The fact that you'll be putting your life on the line daily to protect and serve your community is nothing to take lightly. You are to be commended for stepping up to serve in this manner. If there was ever a time when we need dedicated LEOs, it is now.

Again, good luck and keep us posted.

bikerboy said some good things and I agree wholeheartedly.

I would highly recommend, if you haven't already begun to do so, to get in shape before you begin any academy. The start of the academy is not the time to begin as you will either fail or do poorly. If you saw the first season of "The Academy" on Fox, you will know what I mean. Some didn't prepare and obviously believed they would make it thru.

I was happy to see my former dept. apparently returned to a stringent training academy, because for some time they had relaxed the standards. It is not what it is was when I went thru in 1976, but that is to be expected.

Go on a lot of ride alongs prior to taking the oral as one of the questions will be, "What did you do to prepare yourself for the position." One of your answers had better be that you had gone on a number of ride alongs. Different shifts, different officers; don't just go with your friend.

Congratulations on your score and I applaud you for your choice to enter le. It is an honorable career, even with all of the restrictions, scrutiny and negativity by many in the public; especially those trying to make a name for themselves (i.e. Sharpton, Jackson, etc.).

My career was cut short 5yrs. by injuries, but notwithstanding those, I truly enjoyed my career.

Good luck.
