Have to agree on the "You don't need a CJ degree" comments. If nothing else it's good to have a backup option should you decide law enforcement isn't for you. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Thanks again for all your replies. To confirm that I actually want to do this career I went on a ride along with a local department. I saw some good aspects of the job including the paperwork. I sat there for 3 hours and watched the officer write paperwork even though he offered to do it after my ride along was over because I wanted to see what he had to go through. It just re-assured me that it was not that big of a deal. In total the officer let me ride with him for 10 hours and the only reason I didn't stay any longer was because it was already 3 in the morning and I had to work the next day. But it was a great learning experience and I really enjoyed it.

Go on more than just one ride along as one of the questions asked on the oral boards is what have you done to prepare for the job. They will be happy when you tell them you have gone on a number of rides on different shifts, with both traffic units and criminal units.
Ditto on the CJ agree. |

That's interesting as I thought all depts. permitted ride alongs, especially of applicants or people interested in joining le. I would try the CHP again since your choices are very limited. Good luck.

Ride alongs here are relatively rare. We get ride alongs for Neighborhood Watch leaders, CIT observers, and that's about it.
They pretty much cut out other ride along requests after 9/11.
