We did have an officer once that was beaten to death by his own metal flashlight. I think that may be where some of the current policy stems from. Still doesn't make sense to me, since we do carry GUNS for ****ssake...

Even so... I've seen some pretty decent plastic flashlight action before...

The reason they give out itty bitty stingers is because a lot of scum bags were getting "tonked" and a lot of times rightly so. My dad was an LEO and carried a honking steel flashlight (not aluminum), and he said he liked it better than the side-handled. Why? Because, if someone took a swing and you took out their collar bone with that thing, they had a tough time throwing another. I have carried a 4 D-cell maglight for the reliable light in the past, even though they gave me that tiny little stinger that had only a half-hour's worth of burn time. If you are out in the middle of now-where cutting sign on 20 people would you want reliability, or some wussy piece of garbage that burns out after minimal use because some liberal idiot thinks you are apt to tonk someone? I carried the larger light, and most people I knew did too. Nothing was ever said.

+1 KingArthur, no self-respecting PA should go out in the field without at least a 3D Maglight.
ETA: BTW, my issued stinger hasn't left my tricky bag for months now. Replaced it with a Fenix L2D, brighter, more versatile, and lasts a hell of a lot longer.

I am glad to see some fellow greens in the forum. I may have been out of the Patrol since 2003, but I still bleed green. I work with a lot of former BP's, it is like homecomming. What sector are you with? I was Laredo North. Great work, just hated the town. When they went cross the board 11's on us and killed OCORS it was either northern border or find something else, so I found something else.

When I was a security guard, people would talk all kinds of **** until I pulled the 6-D cell Maglite out of my loop and rested it on my shoulder. It didn't matter that I had a gun, they were just scared of getting their wig split.
Okay so here is something maybe you guys can help me with... what is the longest plastic flashlight on the market? Right now I think it looks like a Streamlight SL-20XP LED at a measly 13.2in...

Yeah, I noticed that as well. You can have a .40 caliber strapped to your hip, or even out, and it doesn't seem to make as much of an impression as pulling out the beat stick. Human nature fascinates me-ah, pistol-whatever. Beat stick, fearful compliance. I also noticed that about the M-4. Pound the brush with one of those things slung over your chest, and people come out of the woodwork to surrender. Come crashing through in your regular gear, they make you want to work for it. People are just plain weird.

KingArthur-You're lucky you got out of LRN when you did. It's referred to as "The Death Star" now. I'm actually at the newest LRT station that used to be LRN's Signcutting Unit, so I'm sure we've worked the same area.

Ah, so you went Laredo West? I remember when they were trying that out to make it a sign cutters only place. Yeah, I left when Vidal was running the place. We called him the "Smurf Catcher". One, because he looked like it, and two he was always going out of his way to try and screw his PA's. I remember one muster when he was still running LRS, and they told us to be careful because he had taken some rounds that night, someone piped up, "Were they .40 calibers?" LOL. And Chief Montoya replaced Barker. Barker was a good guy, Montoya we called the "Evil Mr. Rogers," because he also liked to run his PA's into the ground and never wore his uniform just some weird sweater affair. I heard Vidal got forced to retire by lying under oath trying to screw over a PA. So, who is running LRN and Sector these days?
