The future of Patrol Vehicles
With more and more agencies banning pursuits in their policies and with city & county budgets getting tighter, hybrids will be replacing the fuel economy crown vics. Have any of your agencies started using these yet?
When I was in Spain a few years ago I saw these SMART cars. ODD. I also noticed that a lot of police vehicles were small. Spain. ![]() Torontoist: Toronto Police Get Smart ![]() Borough of Westwood -- Hybrid Police Patrol Vehicle .. . .

One of our cars is a Ford Escape (4WD) Hybrid. I seldom drive it, but it works out fine. Mind you this is not in a patrol capacity, but it sees fairly constant use, all in the city.

I bet they call in a seperate passenger type vehicle for pickup which would completely negate or even causer more fuel usage than just driving around in a midsize sedan would.
But I have no proof of this so just take it as conjecture. Edit-On the hybrid cars also plan to replace the batteries every decade or so. Which making new or refitting new batteries is probably going to create more pollution than you created. Not to mention you have to find a place to put all the old battery stuff.

I vote strap prisoners to the hood or roof or something... maybe even drag 1 or 2 behind the car just for giggles.

I have read in various publications that there is a company gearing up to produce purpose built police vehicles. According to the articles the car can be built according to individual department specs with prices ranging from $20K to $100K. The cars are supposed to be turbocharged diesels that get an average of 30 mpg. So far I have only read about them over the last couple of years and have never seen a production model.
The Hoover Police Department in Alabama is using Chevy Tahoes that burn ethanol. The agnecy has the distinction of being the only department to burn green fuel in Alabama.

Of course ethanol is green - money green. E85 vehicles get about 15% worse milage that their gasoline counterpart there by putting more "green" in the pockets of the fuel suppliers. Also, more ethanol production means more corn being redirected for this purpose meaning more "green" for the corn growers.
Yep! There is a lot of green in ethanol!

You guys just don't get it do you??
The prisoners pull the police cars back to the station, they don't ride in them. That's how they plan on saving money.
