process for becoming a police officer
I'm in NE Ohio and was interested in what the process / initial steps might be to become a police officer. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Depends on the agency you're applying for. The best thing to do is to ask a recruiter.
Generally, you will have written exams, a physical fitness test, and some sort of psychological test or interview before you are even considered for a spot in the academy. You will probably have to have a reasonably clean driving record, and a clean criminal record.

Tengu hit all the points I was going to say. Depends on the state and department requirements. I am not familiar with Ohio so I cant give you too much insight there but, like was already said talk to the officer in charge of recruitment for the department.
Education is also a requirement, here in Wisconsin you have to have at least an Associates Degree at time of hire or have it completed within 5 years of hire. Most departments here wont take you unless you have it done though, however many will give incentive pay to get a Bachelors or greater. Best of luck. Any further questions once you get some specifics let us know and I will try to help.

Such as ? Is this a setup like if I admit I have half a dozen guns, or if I have no problem resorting to violence if needed, I'll be looked at as a nut and denied?
Or is this just to make sure I don't come across as an A$$hole and check my communication skills, etc.?

Ours is primarily used to weed out untruthful answering, inconsistencies in answering, and blatant psychological or personality issues. Some departments will make you take a polygraph. Some departments sit you in front of the chief for a personal interview. Like I said, it depends.
