Accidents Suck

I have removed the story for the time being until the investigation is finished. I'll post it again, don't worry.

Glad you're ok.

Who pays to fix the civilian cars?

Remember, running code doesn't give us the right of way, it merely ASKS for it, it's up to the rest of the drivers to acknowledge and give us the right of way.

Now, time for the ass chewing, and you knew it was coming...

WTF were you thinking NOT wearing your seatbelt, ESPECIALLY running Code 3??

In case you ever think about it again, think about this, the Public Safety Officers Death Benefit ($303k this year) will NOT pay out usually if you are killed in an on duty vehicle accident and are not wearing your seatbelt. That money couldn't give your son his father back, but wouldn't it be nice knowing he and your wife will be taken care of at least financially?

/rant off

Not completely directed at you, glad you're okay. Just trying to remind everyone that driving is what we spend the vast majority of our on duty time doing, and therefore it presents the biggest risks to us.

Out of 105 line of duty deaths at my agency since 1900, 28 were due to automobile accidents.

If I am found responsible the dept. pays, I think. Or the persons insurance.

I agree with everything you say. I am considered a 'reserve' officer in my dept. I work the same hours, and do the exact same things as the full-time guys, but I get no benefits, so I don't know if the Public Safety Officer Benefit thing would cover me. Kinda sucks. Thanks for the butt chewing, I did need it. I will probably get another one when I go in to work tomorrow.

I have no idea. If I ran the red, probably not.

Failure to yield for an emergency vehicle?

If they'd killed you I'm sure the DA would think of something.

Wow. I got my butt handed to me for suggesting a officer killed in an auto accident (not wearing their seat belt) was an idiot for not doing so.

Glad to see at least one LEO thinks the same as I do.

Years ago, a guy I went to the academy with died in a roll over pursuing without his seatbelt. I went to the funeral, it was full honor guard. His wife and small son were sitting there, it was one of those things you had to bite your bottom lip for hard. I have seen the result of not wearing a seatbelt and pursuing first hand. Wear your seat belt, and that is that-period paragaph. No one cares about you out there but you and your family, and they are the reason we do the things we do.
