Been there as well my man....It does suck when you get in a 10-50 at work. I had the LT sit me down and give me a little heart to heart. Not too bad, but it made me feel better since he reminded me that lights and siren are just a "loud please" and that some people will just say "to hell with you".

It will take a chunk out of your ego for a while and will make you feel like crap, but it happens to all of us. You drive around in a car for 8 or more hours a day, eventually you will get into a wreck. Its just statistic's that tell you it will happen.

You will think I am crazy for saying this, but in the end you will be a better officer because of it. You will start to think more about everything you do when running hot, you will make better decisions, and understand that if you go a bit slower and take a little extra time and get there in once piece you will do a much better job of helping the person or officer at the call than if you wreck on the way there and help out nobody.

I was told the same thing after mine and for quite a while I thought it was a load of crap, but in hindsight it is really true. I have become much more aware and a much better driver now when I run lights and siren.

Best of luck and I wish you better luck in the future. Dont forget that your ego will heal, but serious injuries that you could have sustained might have not....SO WEAR THE SEATBELT NEXT TIME!!!!!

At least you won't get arrested like we can in Tennessee. "Failure to yield" is now a class B misdemeanor here, which means we can't issue the corresponding city ordinance (traffic ticket) for it. Our traffic guys will write us a misdemeanor citation for it.

Arrest = fired.

I almost got t-boned in an intersection myself the other day. Was running code to a suicide attempt, had to take a right at an intersection. I actually came to a complete stop in the safetlyzone/gore at that is at this instersection, pulled slightly forward for visibility, and changed the tone of my siren. I checked for clear and then stomped it. As I start to make my turn, a Dodge dully p/u towing a BIG trailer gets into the turn lane that by-passes straight traffic at the light and keeps it comin'. Damn it looked like the biggest truck in the world! I stomped it a little harder and cleared the intersection fast. When I arrived on scene I was a little more unhappy with the attention seeking idiot who "attempted" to cut her wrists. Ran code (which I love) for MINOR abrasions to the wrists. "I thought the physical pain would distract me from my emotional pain." I felt like I had to tell her I risked my damn life to show up in time to save her's, but I bit my damn lip.

I don't usually go lights and sirens to suicide attempts unless there's a gun or bridge involved. The last one I had did involve a bridge, and he fought with us too. Idiot put us all in danger because he argued with his ugly-ass girlfriend.

Wait... so why does selective service end at 26?

I HATE EDP'S! They are the worst! Sometimes they take so much time to get under control I wish they would have just completed the act. It's horrible for me to say, but anyone who has been on a suicide call knows what I mean.

LOL....You arent alone in those thoughts.

The "joke" that is really true is the fact that there is far less paperwork or work in general involved when they finish the job. Its a sad but true fact...

I'm glad that we have a crew of guys to handle EDP's. That really reduced our need to run hot to deal with them.
