Side jobs for Cops?

How many of you have side jobs that you do off-duty? Around here, owning a Lawn Care Business is the side job of choice for the police. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

One of our guys owns a wake-boarding school, another owns an airport shuttle service. Our department actually contracts out cops to the school district for sporting events and to apartment complexs for security. Its a pretty good deal all around; the cops get paid their overtime rate and the client gets a real cop instead of an underpaid, overworked security guard.

I just did a "walk though" of my new job with a cop, he says he needed a part time job. The place we will be working at is a sporting good store. (Scheels)

Once I get everything squared away with my new job, the sheriff's department for the county I am working in lets you work part time for them.

They are always looking for people to pick up transport runs or work the occasional jail shift. Pay is good for the part-timer, and better for the SO since they dont have to pay as much out as for a full timer (especially OT pay), and dont have to pay out the benefits they would have to if they hired another full time position.

My dad is a Sherriff's Deputy and works like 3 side jobs for security. Football and Baseball games for the local schools and a movie theater in Fort Worth.

I see LEO's working security, and at our local gun range quite often. I always feel bad that the folks we trust to keep us safe dont get paid enough to only have that one job.

I heard somewhere that some of the cops in LI NY make close to $100K. If that's true I'd call that pretty liveable even without a second job.

Still, with the risks one has to take and the caliber of people you have to deal with even $100K is hardly out of line.

$100K sounds good until you research the cost of living on Long Island.

Quite likely you could live much better someplace else on half that or less.

Most of us work security, an assload of overtime details, or have a courtesy officer job at an apartment complex to save on rent.
