I am a 911 Dispatcher for a City in North Texas...

Our PD Officers start out in the Academy at just over 50k a year base salary... And local businesses or associations can hire an off duty officer for security at a rate of $37.50 per hour.

Most of the officers I know, do the off duty job 1-2 nights a week for 6-8 hours just for the extra income... its a pretty cush job standing at one of the local movie theaters for 4-5 hours just watching a bunch of juveniles fooling around.

That is one hell of a great rate.

Still, with the risks one has to take and the caliber of people you have to deal with even $100K is hardly out of line.

This is true, my best friends uncle retired with a ranking of Captain from a Long Island police force in Nassau County, he was making 120k a year when he retired, and there they average your best 3 years and you get paid like 75%. So he's sitting pretty for the rest of his life. However, you must recognize Long Island is one of THE MOST expensive places to live in America. I am originally from Long Island, so I'm considering going to apply for police work there once i get my 4 year degree. I can get by for the first year or two living at a relatives house without paying much rent if any. That would give me enough to save up and put a large chunk of money on a house back here in PA lol. Forget buying a nice piece of property on Long Island unless you've got 3-500k cash, depending on where you will be living. I know Sussex County (eastern long island), covers the Hamptons, and they only require a high school diploma, and start you off at 60k a year. But i'm not getting into police work to arrest 16 year old boys and girls speeding around in their daddys 150,000$ car, so i passed on that.

Oh and I forgot to address the original poster, so im editing this in. I've got some family that is LEO/retired LEO and retired military. They do alot of security work on Fire Island for upwards of 40$ an hour as a part time thing. Nothing wrong with making 400 bux a day to watch pretty woman walk around in mini skirts and belly shirts.

I did ANG, fire fighter PT/Vol & security work and patrol for US Forest as a Deputy. Other officers worked PT on EMT/Ambulance which was good money and flexible hours. The rest did security or odd jobs. EMT is a good option and furthers your LE career. I looked at it several times but never had the time.
