We were issued Danner Acadias at the academy, but once I got into the field and chased a few groups of aliens for a mile or two with them, I realized how stinking heavy they are.

Now I wear a pair of 8" Bates with a side-zip. MUCH better, and only cost me $100.

I'm a big fan of Danner. They're a big more expensive than most but you get what you pay for. Many of them have options from the factory for regular re-soling. Very comfortable and hard-work boots. I wear small ones myself, the 4.5" Striker GTX (Gore-Tex). Highly recommended.

Good question - I have been looking at some of the police type shoes. I just have old feet. Figure you guys that are on your feet all day in all kinds of conditions must have a clue. It looks like "some" of the police gear is reasonably priced vs the general public stuff. Will be interesting to follow this thread - also any brands/types to stay away from?

I have 10EEEE feet. Duty boots have always been a problem. I've found that "Magnum" boots are in a very small group that actually come in my size without a special order. I usually get about 18 months of wear out of them before needing replacements.

Danners are comfy, but super expensive. I also find the gore-tex versions to not breathe very well and it feels like your feet are suffocating.

I wear Altama jungle boots:

The LAST thing they are are light weight. They're heavier than Danner Acadias even, but it's what I'm used to. They've got the looks, they've got the protection, they're very breathable, and a big thing for me, they've got speedlaces and can be laced up very very tightly.

+1. Hi-Tech Magnum Side Zips are what I wear. Paramedic. These are lighter than most and very comfy.

If you want a pair that will last for years then go with a pair of Danner boots.
I got a pair of their Trooper IIs back in 99' or 2000 and recently had to replace them. They have since discontinued them. The running shoe type of sole cannot be repaired, at least not locally. I still need to call danner to see if they can repair them. The leather and stitching are still in excellent condition. Their boots are higher priced but well worth the cost in the long run.

Also look at Belleville Boots, lower priced but are still excellent boots. I have a pair of their 770s. Department policy says we are not allowed to wear steel toe. Otherwise I would go with their 880ST boots. If you buy direct from them they give discount to Military and public safety. Just got to fill out a form so they can verify employment status.
