Applying for Reserve Police Ofc position Q on application
I am applying to be a reserve Ofc but have a question about a question on the application. It asks, "Have you been convicted of a misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, or felony?" Does this include juvenile history or is it referring to adult history?
My adult history is spotless, but back in the day when I was young and dumb, is a little different. Should I check the "yes" box and write my explanation? |

I would disclose the juvie info with an explanation. Your records my be sealed, but a background investigator worth any merit will find your Juvie record and if it wasn't disclosed, it could be grounds for disqualification due to withholding of information.
Better to fully disclose and be as honest as possible as opposed to possibly being deemed untrustworthy. |

I agree. Disclose it. Better to admit to it early and leave the decision to them about dismissing it than not telling them and having them find it. Even if they normally would have said, "That's not a big deal," if it looks like you were trying it hide it it'll make it a deal-breaker.

The question says "ever" which is like, ever since you've been alive.
Always answer honestly. If you are less than truthful on your application, how is the public/department to believe that you will be honest in court?

No....the question does NOT say "Ever", it just asks,"Have you been convicted, etc...etc....." That's why I was wondering if it was referring to adult or juvie history. The question is questionable in itself. Either way I will check "yes" and write in my explanation in the space provided.

In most jurisdictions a juvenile record is not required to be disclosed and the information in it can not be used against an applicant. The exceptions are usually LE or any employment involving national security. It's best to answer truthfully even though you may not be legally compelled to do so. In many instances the question is simply asked (as with others) just to determine a persons truthfulness in completing an application. Most LEA employment application (even for reserve positions) will contain some language to the effect that failure to disclosed or intentionally omitted information is grounds not to give the applicant any further consideration. It is likely that a juvenile records will not disqualify you, however failing to disclose it might.

In Ohio, you wouldn't have to. Juveniles are no "convicted," they are "adjudicated." Yes, there is a difference.
Although, I would disclose it if it was my application.
