You've got to love the enthusiasm of the young ones. Being and LEO isn't all about excitement, and it is nothing like what you watch in movies or tv shows. So, I would suggest taking a deep breath and think about it if you think it is one big action movie, it isn't. Working for the government as an LEO provides you two very important things that will matter to you as you get older: the ability to advance in income and have a stable career. No matter what is happening in Wallstreet, you have a job. I would recommend the Border Patrol, but after 2003 they took the cajones right out of it. Looking at the new breed that they have now, I am almost embarrased to say I was one. That being said, what the other gentlemen said is true, government jobs are all about getting your foot in the door. For me, it was the Border Patrol, and I have fond memories of the way it was before it got all wimpified in 2003. But, if you really want to get your foot in the door in and do it fast before the usual budgetary cycle comes around to a dry spell you should look at Deportations. Right now they are hiring like crazy. But, I guarantee you, no matter which of the three becomes president, they will put immigration on the back burner within their first year of office and the money will dry up again for about 5 years or so, before the pendulum swings the other way. As soon as you get your degree, no matter what it is, and you are serious, and not just thinking of what Hollywood potrays LEOs to be, you should go to USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site and apply right away before the cycle swings dry again.

I'd suggest going to mappassessment.com and taking their career compatablity test to see where your personality fits with a variety of different careers. They offer a number of "packages" you can purchase, but the free test is a great tool and a good place to start. You might be surprised by what other careers you match up with. Don't try to "force" something that you think you'd like to do, only to find out later that it's not what really makes you want to get out of bed in the morning and go to work! I just got out of a very successful 12 year career, stable and making great money, because I finally realized that being miserable at work translates to being miserable at home, and no amount of money is worth that. Luckily I'm young enough ( I like to think) that I can make the changes I need to, and I have a great wife to back me up! I think the most important advice I can give you as a young man, just starting out, is to take a deep breath and don't rush into anything. Put your wife/family first in all your decisions, find a career that you "fit" in, and live happy! Just my .02 worth- Mike
