I decided I'm going to change my major from Marketing to Management. I'll still receive a BBA when graduating... but I figured Management would be better than Marketing when going into LE.

If I'm not mistaken the U.S. Marshals put you on a 3-year internship before you get permanently hired. That's a long time to be on pins and needles.

That's one option, but not something I would do. They offer a CSCE Program which is what I'd do...

Try and get into the Federal System first. Be it BOP or something else, then work your way to them.

Most any degree will suffice for a federal LE jobs,...a few agencies will express a preference for a law, accounting or foreign language degree,..but not as a mandatory requirement. Also, all federal agencies give preference to military service. You mentioned joining the AF in your initial post. Going into military service is not only a good way to get your foot in the door, but it also provides excellent training and is recognized on local, state, and federal levels of government. Any military MP, SID/CID background would be a big plus if you have an eye on a federal LE job in the future. Not only will you be competing for jobs against other college grads but you will be competing against grads with military experience. In a military LE assignment you will get exposure to other areas that not only look good on a resume but it may help you to decide which area of LE you wish to work in as a career. Many of the posts regarding the Marshall Service are correct. Your primary job will be serving as an officer of the court,...which isn't a bad job all things considering. Good luck.

I am also 20 years old and a junior in college, CJ major. I have researched federal law enforcement agencies extensively, and I believe that with the U.S Marshals right now they are only accepting candidates with military experience. Not trying to judge your personal life, but if you just made that type of commitment to your wife, why would you join the military now? I just think that there are many more opportunities out there in the CJ field. I first thought of the Marshals as a glorified everday action packed job. Not to knock the guys for what they do, as I'm sure its a challenging job, but I agree with what has been said already. Most of it is transporting inmates, providing security at courts and so on. If you are serious about a LE career, why not look at your state police agency? I think you need to figure out what area of CJ you would like to focus on as a career before concentrating on agency. Just my two cents, and I don't mean to offend you in any way. I've been down the same road.

I think the USAF has a minimum retirement age (without reduced benefits) just like the rest of the country's federal employees; Don't get too excited about retiring at 42.

Maybe I can out here, as i'm a LEO and have worked with DUSM quite a bit....
1) There are two kinds of Deputy U.S. Marshals. The first one is a 0082 series (OPM job classification) and the other is a 1811 series (criminal investigator). They have the same badge, but not necessarily the same duties. 0082 get stuck with full time transports, legal service, and bailiff duties. 1811 DUSM's do it to, but not as frequent. 2) DUSM's journeyman at GS-12 and have a mandatory retirement age of 57 (all federal LEO's fall under this rule / 6c retirement). 3) Getting a job at BoP can get your foot in the door, but the closest 'face time' you'll have with ANY DUSM at FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center) is at the chow hall. BoP are there are three weeks and don't have any training with BoP. That's not a typo. DUSM's have to attend the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) AND the USMS add-on. You'll be down in Georgia for months! Get hired as an 1811 with any agency and you'll end up networking with other special agents and DUSM's... 4) As others have said, people get really fixated on the USMS as being like Tommy Lee Jones. They never showed Tommy being a courtroom bailiff or kicking out a deadbeat renter out of rathole apartment in DC. Yes they do that! If you want to become "fed" or better stated, a federal agent, go to USAJOBS - The Federal Government's Official Jobs Site Do a series search under "1811" which is for criminal investigators/special agents. There are a ton of agencies hiring. Get picked up by one of them and maybe you can go lateral to the USMS later on when they have announcements for current 1811's. If you want to get your foot in the door, there are better places than BoP that pay more and you'll do some fun LE work. US Border Patrol is hiring. They have LE (known as 6c) retirement and they are a ton of former USBP agents who are now special agents with various other agencies. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is also hiring CBP Officers (used to known as inspectors). As of July 1, they will have LE retirement and yes they are gun toters... |
