Either way, I don't see it as ever being "too late" because I get paid to go to school no matter what degree I seek. Plus, I'm not even 21 yet so I'd say I've got some time...

I honestly don;t know much about this subject, but I do have a friend who's a US Marshal, based in Southern Illinois. He started with the Marshals after leaving the Marines. I do know that he's not home as often as he'd like. He spends most of his time transporting federal prisoners, hunting for wanted fugitives, and he also deals with people who are in witness protection.
Best of luck. Last edited by Tripledigitride : 05-10-2008 at 04:07 PM. |

JPainter, im also looking into federal law enforcement as i have family history in the field. I'm finishing up my freshman year at community college and am transferring to a university this fall. I am also a criminal justice major, and from what ive been told most agencies do not require a criminal justice degree. When i transfer to the university i'm going to continue my criminal justice major and minor in sociology(because i like it over psychology), showing that i have knowledge in other aspects of the field. Which would prove useful as a federal agent, or for getting me a job in a whole other field all together. You're best bet would be to finish your marketing major since youre only a year away, and try to minor in some form of sociology or psychology, to show you have an understand of the social sciences and what makes the world go 'round. My Grandfather was a US Marshall as well as a Secret Service agent, he loved the job, if you are lucky enough to get in, so will you. Also another tip, they really look for people with a high GPA, in the 3.9-4.0 area, thats just to impress them. Where it really counts is in the interview. Just try to do everything you can to support your character and what you stand for, for when you have your interview.

From what I've heard (some from reliable sources, some from the rumor mill I'm sure) for your first several years as a US Marshal you'll be working doing prisoner escort for a court and none of the "fun stuff". You MIGHT get to do security for a judge (ever held an umbrella for a federal judge?). After you've been in for a while is when you get to start doing the "fun stuff".

If you aren't too set already on the USMS, I would suggest looking at other options as well. If you want exciting you could look for a police department that will provide for more opportunities after a couple years on patrol. I work for a department in a suburb, but it has so many opportunities it makes my head spin. They have a repeat offenders unit that does a lot of tracking down the real bad offenders who have felony warrants, and do a mix of surveillance and tactical fun stuff (with fun toys). They are tasked almost exclusively with the kind of stuff that is the "exciting" side of the USMS.
That is only one example of the many units in the department, many of them are incredibly interesting to me. There are also federal task forces you can get assigned to including DEA, FBI, ATF, and others. Not only would this route allow you to get a great foundation for a federal career, but it would easily provide the experience necessary. Just a thought.
