Curious about LEO perks
Hey all,
I was just curious about how officers obtain ammunition. I imagine the agency would supply everything you need right? What about range time? Is ammunition provided for that also? Does your department have a private range? Just wondering.

I think you are going to be really really surprised at how niggardly (and before anyone gets their panties in a bunch hit this link niggardly - Wiktionary It's old Norse) many departments are. It's very common for any LEO that wants to stay sharp to have to purchase their own ammo.

skimpy cheap tightwad penny pinching could have been better to use... my cousin is an officer and i believe he gets LEO discounts for ammo and range time. i can confirm with him next time he's awake during the day. he works the graveyard shift so i rarely see him. infact i don't think i've seen him once since he's been sworn in... dang!

My four, local LEO family members and friends ALL have to buy their own ammo to head out to range trips, unless it is a department function or qualifying.
My two FED buddies are rolling in the $hit. They are usually luggin around duffle bags full, when we go plinking.

Wow, color me surprised. I guess it would get awfully expensive if the whole department had free reign on range ammo.

The dept would provide 2 boxes (100 Rnds) in what ever caliber you carried 9mm, 40 or 45 every month for practice. So I could get 100 in 9mm and 100 in 40.
I knew the armorer very well and most officers only shot before qualification. So it was pretty much unlimited ammo for me. It wasn't uncommon for me to get 500 - 1000 rnds at a time in 9MM or .40. As the armorer got tired of dipping into the closet for me. For rifle ammo I could get 250 rnds 223 a month and that was it.. no more. I spoke to the armorer a few years ago he said they only give out 1 box a ammo a month and they went to Glock 22's.

My department gives me the following:
300 rounds a YEAR for two (2) qualification shoots (and we typically use 250 rounds per shoot!) - I have to make up the difference out of pocket Since I STRONGLY believe in 'train like you fight', I don't use hard ball or 'target practice' ammo for these shoots - I use JHP (hate to say it, but as cheap as I can find). 60 rounds per year for carry ammo - usually my choice (I get either Hornady TAP or Federal HST) Any practice ammo comes out of my pocket - 2,000 - 3,000 rounds a year and, yes, I sometimes use hard ball (when I'm really broke!). Perks? WTF - you won't get many in this area - not with cheap skate admin types (who never hit the streets or carried a side arm for anything other than parade duty!) running the show.....

I'm actually pretty lucky. I get 200 rounds a month of practice ammo (Winchester White Box) and 50 rounds of duty ammo (Winchester Ranger SXT), free targets and range time.
I also have full access to the armory, including our "training guns." These are guns that are not duty type weapons, but stuff that officers might find on the street. I teach classes with these guns on how to render them safe if encountered on the street, but I also can check these guns out of the armory and take them to the range whenever I want. Plus since I am also our EOD Officer, I am in charge of our "ammo for destruction." Old evidence ammo and what stuff people turn in for destruction comes to me to be destroyed as I see fit. I am a firm believer in "destruction by design" so I shoot up everything I can.

We don't have to pay a lane fee or for targets at the department's range. We do have to pay for the practice ammunition.
We are issued three mags worth (+1 for the chamber) of duty ammo each year.
