[quote=hacker15;1018283]I think the problem here is - you're talking to the UNIFORM, not the PERSON inside it. Try to think of people in authority positions as PEOPLE 'cause that's what we are without the badge, uniform, or gun.

+1, well said. I used to get nervous around officers as well, until one day during one of my many speeding tickets (when I was young and dumb) one of our local officers said almost the same thing. Ahhh, Brings back memmories.

I'm sure that it might have to do with the tone and facial expression in which the questions were posed. Not all questions need to answered and a fair question, properly presented, can be educational to both.
Good point - the reaction in body language sometimes says a lot more than the mere words spoken. You have to look at the total package - a smart @ss response will usually lead to heightened awareness of the individual and much closer observation of his/her reactions to your questions.

Think of it as moving very quickly from Condition Green (coming from a causal question) to Condition Yellow (evoking a smart @ss response). You learn very quickly that this type of comeback is most often given by someone with 'something to prove' and, as part of the job, you don't want to have him/her prove it on you.
