Written and Physical Tests

Next week I will be taking my written and physical tests for the first time. I recently finished up college and earned my bachelor's degree and I am looking to get right into law enforcement.

In my area, I applied to 8 different agencies using a third party. I will take the National Criminal Justice Officer Selection Inventory (NJCOSI) and then the standard physical test.

Any advice? I picked up the Arco "Master the Police Officer Exam" 17th edition and have bee working through it. I hope to do well on the written exam.

I am not in the worst shape of my life, but not the best shape either. I have been running and increasing my pushups and sit ups so that I can max out the tests.

Do police departments even care if I max out out on points in the physical exam or is it just a pass fail? Thanks, -Chris

Our dept. is pass/fail.

You used a third party for your applications? How does that work? Up until we just recently began taking internet applications, you had to appear in person to get the app. from the cheif's secretary.

It is a web site service that conducts the testing and sends the scores to the agencies that participate.

If i were you i would head to a city cause i passed all required tests and found out they only hire 12 at a time, so re-test and re-test and re-test, aahhh, what a pain...
The written is easy and everything else is as well but don't sleep on the sit-ups, trust me make sure you can do at least 40 a min....

I failed my written test the first time, then I got one of those study guides books read the thing like ten times. The second time I took the test I got the third highest score and Im dyslexic. So you did well by getting a study guide. The physical wasn’t so bad. I didn’t do pushups though so I got a really low score on that but the running and side stepping and all was easy. The only thing that held me back was my medical Im 6’1” and 240lb and they told me that because of my weight to hight rateo ( because im fat) I would have to have a treadmill EKG dun to prove to them that I was fit enough to go to academy. I run three miles every day and they wanted to know if I could handle academy running, anyways I did the EKG and they passed me, now Im waiting for my psych eval and then off to six months of hell. I mean live in academy. No great reward comes at a small price

gimp297:

What exam did you take? Was it the NJCOSI?

Was this your study book?

I don't anticipate having too hard of a time with the exam. I did well at my university and I am fresh out of college so I am hoping this helps me. I don't know what to think of the personality half of the exam. I read that they use your answers to compare what the ideal officer would indicate.

The sample questions I read ask you to rate your agreement:

"I am sometimes nervous around friends whom I have not seen for a long time."

or "I enjoy trying to make others feel comfortable in new situations."

I guess I will just have to answer honestly and hope I have what it takes. I am at the point now that I am starting to relax, knowing that if I do my best and am not selected then this job is not right for me (at this time, anyway).

Don't stress over it and answer the questions honestly; you'll do fine.

BTW, my personal favorite question was:

T or F...I have stopped beating my wife.

Talk about a no-win situation! Admit to domestic violence either past or present.
