Exclamation Lets remember to do good searches

Now I know it has been said before and will be said again but....lets always remember to do good searches.

Here is just one more reason to remember to do so:

SAP CAP This standard baseball cap can be used as a blackjack or sap. Just use the bill as the handle and the cap as an impact weapon. The secret of the Sap Cap is the pocket of a unique impact material that is 110% the density of lead and will not rust. Velcro adjustment. Sugg. Retail: $59.99

I have not seen these until now it was posted on a Wisconsin LEO only officer safety website (WILENET for those WI LEO's who can access it). I know that we have always been taught to remove hats during searches for the obvious reasons of being able to conceal contraband, weapons, drugs, etc....But lets also keep in mind that anything could be a weapon and keep this in mind when we are dealing with suspects before they are cuffed and being searched. Maybe someday one of us will be the unlucky person that has somebody attempt to try out their "Sap Cap" on.

Stay safe,

Brian

I've seen the button on a ball cap crack a windshield. An officer was swatting at a bug in the patrol car with his cap when it happened. I would imagine that would hurt like hell if that was a skull being his. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks. A few years back I was in charge of putting together those sorts of bulletins for my department and we came across some crazy stuff. Will definitely be something to keep in mind when asking a suspect to remove a hat.

Took one away from a guy trying to go into court with it about 6 months ago. When I draw outside duty (scanning people going into court), I always make them take their hat off and put it with their other stuff on the belt before they go through the scanner. Then I hand them back the hat with their stuff. When I picked this one up, it felt strange. These hats may LOOK like a normal one, but they're a lot heavier.

Saps, slaps (or anything that can be used as one) are illegal in NY (like most anything that can be used to defend yourself - wouldn't want to hurt the poor misunderstood perps, now would we?????).
