questions on tx laws

I will be traveling to New Mexico from Houston with my family and all the In-laws , and I want to take my XD just in case anything happens , not with my in-laws but you know with bad guys . Now my question is I have been hearing that you can carry in your car with a loaded weapon . I dont know if will will be traveling with it loaded so I want to know if I can carry the XD and the clip together . There will be three vehicles with tx plates on them and when we get to New Mexico ,we dont want any trouble . My father in law will be taking his Colt 45 1911 also . What are the laws in NM for the same thing ?

ps . I put this on the Chatter box room but i think i should have put it in this room instead . maybe one of yall could shed some light on this for me before i have to have my lawyer read it for me (LOL) . From what I read, as long as it is not in plain view , im not gonna commit a crime and im not in a gange and I am on my own premises , I should be ok carrying it -say on my door pocket . I do not have a CHL. thanks

Traveling is a defense to prosecution in Texas. However CHL gets you around that. The legislature has said that unless you are engaged in gang/criminal activity you can have a gun in your vehicle. Some big city prosecutors (your former DA for one) said that they would still prosecute.

I do not know about New Mexico.

Even when traveling into NM, the Constitution of the United States of America still applies, albeit probably in Spanish. Do you think those NM cops are going to pull you over and search your vehicles, just because you have Texas plates?
