the three step rule is crap. and i know about statute 790. my HS is securely encased in a snapped holster, under my drivers seat. and if i hear one more moron friend of mine say "thats not three steps!" im gonna pistol whip the bastard. ive never heard it from FHP, but many Lee county, and local Cape Cops(ugh....) like to think that was law. i was actually in a car with a friend, and the cop was being such a dick it when he told the cop he had a gun(this is why i asked my first question) the cop told him its the law you must have three steps, and after they argued for a few minutes, i politely told the officer to check out florida gun law statute 790. needless to say, he wasnt happy that he couldnt take us to jail...

you must take three steps before you can fire the gun(and keep in mind, in florida it is legal to have your gun loaded and chambered)
ie- unloaded or not ready to fire, in a holster, in glovebox. thats three steps.
to me, thats two steps to long.

Of course the moral of the story is if you are in FL get your CWFL...it's very easy to get and you don't have to worry about whether or not a cop thinks you are breaking the (non-existant) three steps rule.

Hell anyone can get a Florida license, even out of state. It's great!

Absolutely. One point I'd make though being an ardent supporter of law enforcement. Do you wish to potentially be part of the problem, or part of the solution? I've carried (legally) for several years, and when stopped by a LEO I always hand them my DL, Proof of insurance, and CCW permit when they first approach my truck as a matter of cooperation / courtesy. LEO's have a difficult job (that I wouldn't do), so anything I can do to help promote cooperation and lower tensions I do.

I actually got stopped once a year or so ago and was asked to exit my car and accompany the officer to the shoulder of the road to continue our dialog. The officer simply asked me where my weapon was, to which I replied, inside my waistband on the right side. All he asked me to do, in a very calm manner, was to keep my hands away from that area while we spoke. I did as he asked, and ultimately received a verbal warning for the traffic stop, along with a five minute conversation on where and what I shoot.

The moral of my comments is simply this. Always try to find ways to make the system work rather than trying to buck it.

First off, do not tell them you have a gun. Tell them that you have something that would possibly excite them and they will ask you what it is. Then tell them it is a firearm and where it is located. That way you don't go getting snatched through the window when you tell them you have a gun.

Second, there is no three step rule in Florida. You must keep the gun in a snapped holster and must not be readily accessible. For example it must be in your glovebox, back seat, or in a plastic carrying case. It does not matter if you have any ammo in the gun or one chambered. As long as it's not readily accessible, you should be good.
