Picked Off The "Chatter Box" Forum

Couldn't resist this - like you guys DON'T KNOW just how well a Taser works to control a 'difficult suspect'....

Wish they had these things when I was working the street/road - all we had was a voice, CP, and (if allowed) a wooden baton.....

I've seen some unacceptable uses of tasers in my time reading the news. A father leaving the maternity ward tasered while holding his newborn, and a woman trying to surrender who was tasered getting out of an SUV. I cannot think of any way this officer could have been more clear. The use of the taser prevented a pursuit which could have resulted in injury to both the subject and the officers. His instructions were clear, the suspect was noncompliant and attempted to flee, and the taser ended the situation in seconds.

trelane I must disagree with you, what do you think is the alternative, keep talking/yelling comands to the people until they finally realize, hey this officer is talking to me, should I obey his/her commands or should I just keep doing what ever I want?

It is very simple when pull over/question/whatever by a police officer, do as you are told/asked to do and the encounter will be brief, you act stupid and YOU will escalate the situation.

to answer your 2 examples

1- what kind of father uses his new born as a shield, if my baby is in my arms and I am doing something wrong, I will put my child on the floor carefully and comply, if not I am WILLINLY putting the baby at risk, in my book, that person is garbage.

2-if a woman is about to surrender, why did she go back to her SUV?, to retrive a weapon? I dont know, so the taser is better that a shot, do you agree, I dont know her intentions and I want to go home to see my family.

DO NOT play monday night quackerback, you were not there you did not dealt with the high emotional/ stresfull situation at that time, but you sure feel very confortable questioning the officers actions....nice

until you have been there and live thru that, you can NOT say a word

on the video at hand this 2 young males did not want to cooperate and the 1 officer did very well at controlling the situation, did any one notice he was alone?? did I mention ONE officer, if this 2 wanna be thugs were carring weapons and had murder in their minds the news would had been different.

taser safes lives, there have been taser related deaths, yes I'll admint to it, but there are underlaying medical conditions behind those deaths.

mathematical equation

1 person tasered= 1 person going to jail
1 person shot= 1 person going to the morgue

I don't think he was disagreeing with the OP -- that video was a perfectly fine use of tasers; rather, he seemed to indicate that there have been, in the past, bad uses of tasers.

To respond to your answers:

What does that make the officer who tases the above man with a newborn? Depending on the circumstances, this gets treated as a hostage situation -- shooting a taser at a suspect with a newborn is flat stupid.

I'd have to agree with you. Of course, everything is circumstance dependent.

This is the nice thing about living in America -- we can say a word, generally more. What you're talking about is what people, media and courts do on a daily basis. Folks are entitled to their opinion. Freedom of thought is absolute and this is what determines moral standards in society.

As previously mentioned, I think this was, absolutely, a great use of the device. There was a runner who was quickly 'persuaded' not to be so fleet of foot. I thought it was going to be a bad encounter -- maybe the officer tased the compliant suspect, but newp.

Good video.
