Running into folks you've arrested or cited
I'm the only Asian officer in my agency so I'm fairly recognizable. So far the encounters haven't been unpleasant and they've all been on duty. They usually recognize me before I them. I'm starting to understand why alot of officers don't like living where they work.

I work for a VA Hospital as a Police officer, the hospital I work for is mostly mental and drug/alcohol dependancy treatment. Needles to say even though these guys are vets as I am, they are not the guys you find in the board rooms, many are homeless and many are out patient. In a average week I will get two or more death threats and see these guys in the community on a regular basis, I carry all the time now.

That's why you be nice when you hand out a ticket. They may ressent the ticket but they will also remember a pleasant, professional encounter.

Very frequently I encounter someone who thinks I've arrested them before, or made a call at their house before. So, I actually have more or less a five times greater chance than you do of running into someone who "I" have arrested before, and I have NO WAY of knowing who the perp is, why the were arrested, and how the A/O treated them. When I'm off duty I carry no less than my pistol, spare mag, flashlight, knife, pepper spray, and my CELLPHONE.

I was responding to a wanted person who ran call not too long ago. While patrolling the area, someone put radio traffic out that he had run into the area Walmart. So a whole bunch of us roll down ther and setup up a perimeter. I posted up at one of the entrances in case he tried leaving. While standing there some guy my age (young) walks up and says, "Hey officer Battersby! DO you remember me!?!?). I said, "Oh ****," under my breath. I remembered him all right. He was a pain in the ass and most annoying inmate from my housing unit from when I worked the jail about a month prior.
I have been out with my roommate a couple times at bars and been approached by people who remember me from teh jail. We don't go to those bars anymore.

Hell the first arrest I ever made was a 16 year old kid for MIP. My wife and I see him while we were at dinner two nights later.
Seems to happen more often than I would like. Will-

Used to happen quite often - and it's more than enough reason to carry every time you leave the house - no exceptions, no excuses. Being inside as court officer, it's not too bad - I still see people that appear in court for some pretty serious sh*t - but I'm more of a bystander now (at least that's how they see me). Every once in awhile I see some that I know have outstanding W&W's pending against them. I can now call 911 and leave the heavy lifting to the uniforms. But now I get to watch!

That is why I try to be professional during my encounters with the public. I have run into several people I have arrested while out and about including a mental patient who I convinced not to kill himself. That's why I keep a gun with me all the time, along with a sharp knife and cell phone. I also do what I can to stay in shape so that if I am noticed I'll be physically prepared. I have also talked with my wife about backing away and getting help in order to protect her and the kids.
