Thinking of applying

I am thinking of applying to become a LEO. What I really want to do is detective work on the internet.
I was told that I have to be a on patrol for 3 years before I could transfer.

How difficult is it to transfer once inside the dept.? Also is there programs that you can ride along to see if you want to do the job or not?

do some ride alongs and make sure you want to do this job, its not for everyone......and once your hired, you are hired as a police officer (patrol officer) ....... be prepared to do just that for 20 years or so, thats what your hired to do, if you get promoted to detective then thats cool, but many (most) do not and remain a patrol officer for their entire career.

what Im saying is that, take a department with about 100 sworn officers from the chief on down, there will be around 15 detetives, obviously, not everyone will do what they think they want to do, so if you get the jobs you want, thats great, but you will be hired to be a partol officer, nothing more and nothing less.......

its a great job, I love it (being a detective), and many (most) patrol officers love what they do, and dont want to do anything else......for many different reasons. I loved patrol too, and its where everything starts for most part

Our Dept. hired a guy one year that just finished his Master's Degree and had to wait about a week until the next academy class. One day he was at the copier, when some Officer's came in after making a big dope arrest where they had to fight this one guy pretty hard. They all had parts of their uniform's ripped, skinned knees/elbows, but were laughing & joking & talking about the fight....

This guy went to the Chief's office and asked if he was gonna have to get into fights with people too. The Chief told him, "Well, yeah probably...it kind of happens when you arrest some people.." This guy said, "Oh, I didn't know that...I don't want to work Patrol....isn't there a desk job I can have somewhere?"

After being told that he was hired as a basic patrolman and he had to work the road for a while before he could even think about being promoted to a "desk job".....he quit. He thought it was unfair that with a Master's degree, he couldn't get a different position within the Dept. other than a "lowly" beat cop.

Our high-tech crimes detective is our most senior detective. Like the guys said above, you start in patrol; in my department, it will take probably 5-10 years to become a detective, usually working child abuse/sex crimes.

Basically your probably not going to get a job wearing a shoulder holster for quite a while so, if you want to be a cop, put visions of Miami Vice out of your head.

FBI has a great electronic crime division....but plan on having at least 5 years of experience and a Bachelors Degree before they will even give you the time of day.

I on year 11, and I would not trade it. There are things about this job that will drive you nuts and things that will make you smile over and over.

Best to do your homework and make sure this is the job for you. It isn't all pursuits and gun fights. Most of the time it's alot of paper work, so much you'll want stock in an ink company.

Good Luck,

I can see where he's coming from...the military has the OCS for people who have college degrees and want to enlist out of college. Sure, they have to go through basic and all the extra stuff and you certainly don't get to skip the rough/tough part of it either.
