Departmental Issue of the Springfield XD
I am a police officer in Alabama. I ran into an old co-worker who now works at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
They have a new Chief of Police. He has purchased for the department, new Springfiled Xd .40's. (service model, 4" Barrel, Blued). Gun comes with 3-12 round magazines. My friend said that they will be getting night sights in the near future. Yet, the University of Alabama, in Tuscaloosa, issues the Glock 22 with Night Sights. Different departments, different guns. Both government agencies, go figure. They used to issue, long ago, a 2" 5-shot .38 special. They then went to the Glock 17. Afterwards to the Glock 22. At least they have guns. I have read that some colleges still do not arm their campus police. A ticking time bomb. Can you say lawsuit. |

In CA each UC or CSU or JC campus police department is a separate entity. Perhaps it is the same in Alabama?

I think unless they are large state schools they do not have a P.D.
they have "life safty" or "security" they are heavily armed with a flashlight and a radio

Each is totally seperate. For example, in Tuscaloosa County, Tuscaloosa PD issues the Sig Line of Pistols: 9mm, 40 Cal or 45 ACP. Your choice. You must shoot a higher score to carry the 45 (p220) Northport P D issues the Glock 22. Tuscaloosa county Sheriff's Dept. issues the H & K USP 40. Yet, in Jefferson County, I do not believe anyone but Birmingham PD issues guns. They issue a Beretta 9mm. |

Two years ago when I was in college their was a huge push for the campus security to be issued fire arms, especially since they go on call in the town since the police force consists of two part time cops. I sat in on one meeting and the sheeple drove me nuts to the point I left early.

My school they all carry I think G22s, many wear tasers... we have a police surveillance van (I don't know why) and dozens of officers, 3 stations on campus, 4 or 5 temp stations at certain buildings. Police on bicycles, cars, no motorcycles though... I don't know why a college needs a surveillance van, most action its ever seen was a kid trying to steal it... (roomates a cop I hear fun stories) hey I live in Downtown Detroit go figure, outside of larceny the safest large school in the area.

Of all the schools I've been to our PD is the worst though. They rarely, if ever walk the campus. When they do it's only the lower areas and NEVER the parking garages. Most of the time they are either A) Setting speed traps or B) BSing with college girls on the quad. - Ryan

at UW madison, they have both UWPD and UW security officers. havent seen too many of the security officers actually, not sure where they even work(major events are handled by a seperate security company)
the police do a lot and work in conjunction with MPD, the capital police, and the Dane county sheriffs departments. from what ive seen all of these departments issue some type of glock, and have heard that you can choose which model in some. also heard that they will allow the use of XD's. looking to fill out applications to all of these departments in about 2 years when i finish school and then pic which one looks best from there.
