we swap out uppers, but keep the real half with the light on it, its just such a pain in the azz to swap uppers, but I think we'll keep swapping the uppers as opposed to throwing plastic and paint down our nice expensive barrels....I can imagine the mess when a double feed from those cheesy plastic mags jams two sims full of paint into my chamber.....I hate cleaning them after a day of shooting as it is, dont wanna clean paint out.......if this question came up at the school you attended, fill me in, Im sure someone mentioned it

Yeah, it came up. The 5.56 stuff uses real mags (your own) and the sabots are aluminum instead of plastic. We didn't have any failures in the class and the instructors said they haven't seen one yet. It seems to feed better than the 9mm ammo and with the aluminum sabot, separations shouldn't be a problem.

As far as using your "real" barrels, I shoot plastic sabots in my black powder rifles and it doesn't hurt them. The "paint" is actually a mixture of colored detergent and antifreeze. I understand your concern and I'm not sure I would want to shoot the stuff in my AR either, but I don't think the stuff would actually harm our barrels.

We have dedicated Simunition 9mm M-16A1s in our armory. I don't think our dept. is going to re-invest to get 5.56 conversion kits and I'm sure as heck not going to buy my own, so I guess I won't be finding out what it does any time soon.
