Hey all, I will be taking Sheriff physical endurance test this Friday for the county I live in and I have been having problems with the running. I believe I have to run 1.5 miles in 15:24 to pass that part of the test. I am ready for the push up and sit up tests but I am not feeling too sure about the running. Anyone here taken the test and can shed some light on how difficult it is? I really want to be prepared because I've been waiting a while for this chance. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well I would think that if you're even in just slightly better than average shape then a 10 minute mile pace should be easy enough to attain.
Don't psych yourself out. Look at it this way ... Navy SEAL wannabe's that are in BUD/S have to run in sand and in combat boots at a 6 minute per mile pace for 5 miles. You will probably be on a track or flat surface. Don't take your first 800 meters out to hard and just get in a good pace. Have you tried running a mile and half yet on your own? If haven't and have time do it so you know what kind of pace you will need. |

Yeah, I have ran a mile and a half and I seems that I barely squeak by the time limit by about 40 seconds. I just need to know if i need to train harder.

Before I got old and fat that would be quite a simple task. I think when my brother was in the army the 2 mile max. was about 15min. Also, we all forget this, but we are usually capable of much more than we realize. Keep a positive attitude and pace yourself.

Normally I'd say yes ... train harder but with the test being so close I wouldn't suggest running as your primary method of getting ready for the test. You'll have dead legs and you might not make the standard. Perhaps a few days of shorter distances but with an emphasis on speed. Also, might recommend some type of intense cross training for a session or two ... perhaps stationary cycling, Starimaster, or swimming. I would advise either not running the day before or very light running to ensure fresh legs for the test. Good luck.

I don't think it's that bad, break it down a bit. The normal lap on a highschool style track is 1/4 mile, so 6 laps in 15 minutes gives you 2.5min/lap. You could probably do it with a quick walk/light jog and have no problem.
Find a local school with an open track and give it a shot, shoot for keeping them under 2 minutes and it'll be cake

Well I am in the Navy now and i am also training myself for the Sheriffs dept and in the Military i HAVE to run my 1.5 in less than 12:00. It is said that you can walk 1.5 in 15:00. Like other people have said it isnt that difficult and 90% of it is mental. How bad do you want it??? i took my Physical tet for the sheriffs last week and we had to run 2 miles on pavement in less than 20:00 i did it in 15:00 and that is because i pushed my self until i was feeling like therre was no end. If you put your mind to it you are going to smoke the test and feel so good at the end. If you puch your mind your body will follow. If you want a good running plan let me know and also let me know and i will try to help. If you dont do as good as you want you can take it again right?

I would get a good pace and jog most of the time but I was taught to sprint the last leg of a race. I would go out and try it and see just how far you can sprint without slowing down at the end. You just have to push yourself. I would def. try to practice a full run today with the sprinting the end just to see how long you can sprint for and it will also give you time for your legs to rest before the test.
