i havent read all the posts, but... growing up, we have always shot stray dogs/animals that come on our land, and never had any problems. its kind of like shooting the gofers(or groundhogs, whatever it is that people shoot) off of your land.

if the dogs dont have papers or tags, then technically no one owns them, so they would constitute as strays.

if it were me, i would warn the dog owners of my intentions and ask them to fix the problem. if the problem doesnt get fixed after the second warning its fire at will.

Well, the only bad thing about that is the fact that they live there all the time and we are not on our land every day. They COULD make things difficult for us...if you knw what I mean. Broken windows, leaving our gates open, messing with things in our barns...and it would be impossible to prove they did it. We do NOT want to make enemies with anyone. My parents will be moving up there permenently in about 3 years for retirement....it would not be good if their sons have already pissed off their neighbors!

Yes, I considerd poisoning bait and leaving it for the dogs, but the thought of poisoning someones pet by mistake or killing other animals kept us from doing it. Shooting involves taking out only the dogs on our land at the time and you KNOW what dies and what lives.

I don't want to "warn" our dog owning neighbor - he will see it as a threat and anything that goes wrong around his place (real or fabricated) will be blamed on us. I also don't know if he is buddies with the Sheriff or Deputies - this could also make our situation worse and the police could decide to "show those weekender city slickers" a thing or two and use us as an example. Don't want to go there.

I thought about contacting the Sheriff dept and talking to them, but I really don't want to draw attention to us and our plight, because we may end up going to "shoot, shovel and shut up" in the end. It would be very easy to shoot these dogs over time and bury them in the woods, never to be found by their irresponsible owners.

I just would like to know if we are breaking the law by doing so. If not, I'll do it in plain sight and not worry about sneaking around. Otherwise, the dogs will disappear at night and over a short period of time.

We did not pay major dollars for a huge dog run for our neighbors...sorry!

well if you want to play it that safe then you dont have many options.

i would have to say that shoot and bury is probably going to be your end result. if anyone ever asks all you have to say is "i dont know, they were strays, they probably ran off"

if it were me... i'd shoot'em, gut'em and hang'em on the fence, just like a cyote.

Believe me, if I lived on the land all the time, I would leave 'em on the fence and not give a wit what the neighbors thought, but since they could make my life miserable and jack with us to no end when we're not here, I'll pass. I get where you're coming from on that one.

Yep, I think they'll start disappearing...one or two at a time.

We can always play dumb and say... "well, we're only up here on weekends..we don't know who owns what dog or where they went" if we are asked. Since we have not really been THAT vocal about the dogs, only to those other neighbors that might shoot the dogs before us, who's to know where they went. I have lots of thickly wooded, sandy areas and a couple of shovels. We also have accurate rifles that shoot 22shorts that are hard to hear from the neighbors house.

If they dont see us shoot or bury the dogs...its their word against ours and theres no proof. Right?

...what dogs?

...can you describe these dogs?

...nope, haven't seen them.
