I second the vote for talking to the local PD first, what do you have to loose from checking into it? Sounds like you are concered about reprocussions or you wouldnt have take the time to ask on here.

I use a paintball gun after a couple of hits they get the message and you can identify them later. I'm in the city limits but the local animal control told me it was ok if the dogs were in my yard. They could also use the paint marks to identify the dogs and have a talk with the owners.

Coming from "small town Big Cop" Ohio if you have never been in trouble with the police before and you get caught shooting the dogs you WILL be taught a lesson. It is usually a financial lesson, because everyone knows that fines keeps people from doing stupid things. Being an upstanding citizen you should know better anyway! However, if the police have a special pair of cuffs for you, they expect that behavior and everyone has a good laugh.
So, It's best to know what kind of trouble you'll get into first. Also, don't acknowledge that you know where the dogs came from, just that they are stray dogs and they were on your property. The last thing you need in court is your neighbors 4 year old crying over how much she misses sparky, spot, curly, max, fido, snoopie, jake, and gismo.
