asking a cop about his weapon
i had allways wondered what caliber the LEO's in boise idaho carry i know they carry glocks since i had since them in their holster. i was allways afraid of asking a cop specific questions about their weapons because they might take it the wrong way im not sure what way that is but didnt want to get into it with a cop. well the other day i saw an older cop which in my experiences are way nicer then the young ones so i walked over and asked what caliber and brand (i figured if the cops carry them they are good enough for me to carry since i have yet to decide on a carry round) well the cop said he carries 45 acp speer gold dots and was very nice about it and i ended up having a good conversation with him. i just thought i would post this to see if anybody has had a bad experience with asking a LEO about his gun or ammo

i dont mind people asking me about my weapon usually, but it does make me watch them a little bit more closely. i dunno, it just kind of sends up a red flag to me, not that it makes me nervous, i just turn into one cold hearted un trusting S.O.B. when I put my uniform on. it really depends on who is asking. but i dont see why somebody could "get into it" with somebody asking about thier duty weapon. it happens all the time. the cops who get thier panties all in a twist about it (and i know a couple who do) are way too nervous

Sorry not exactly on topic but....
You wouldn't happen to live in Boise would you? I'm originally from Idaho. Man i miss that place! Anyway i have a few friends out here in Hawaii on the police force and they are pretty approachable when it comes to answering questions. So far i haven't had any negative experiences when asking them questions about gear. Last edited by Musashi316; 09-12-2007 at 12:37 PM. |

I was at the Local Highschool Football game a few weeks ago and the Sherrif Dept sends a couple guys down for Security. Well my buddy is a Sherif Dupty. We talk ever now and again.. He Carries a P99 9mm... I told him i wanted to take him to the Range and show him how to shoot it...
Told him if he was lucky i would let him shoot my XD... haha If you just keep your distance and talk to them in a respectable manner they should show you the same respect.

If you're desperate to know, I'm sure the city will let you check the expense records -- since they are, after all, public documents.

I usually say things like, "So. Was the Glock your choice or is it issued?" They look, smile and say, "Issued. If the choice was mine, I would carry X".

I asked one when I was at a Roundtable Pizza here in Boise (Younger guy) and got a sneer when I mentioned the XD... like he thought it was sub standard. I almost pulled it out to have him look but my survival skill's told me not too. (haha)

I asked a Pomona, Ca. police officer about his weapon a month or so ago and it turned into a 2o minute conversation about firearms, ammo, shooting and a recent traffic stop that unveiled a loaded AK47.
He carried Glock.45 with Rangers, helluva nice guy. Young too!

I was working on a bank remodel, Since they were open while the remodel was happening all the electrical was being done at night but I had to be on sight during the day in case other contractor needed something or something happened. I ended up sitting at the door next to the off duty cops that was doing security. We talked about guns, laws, criminals. Whatever. Since then and the stories I heard of shootout, drug raids, and traffic stops. Some of the stories were pretty interesting, like the no knock warrant they served on someone with a couple outstanding warrants. When they went in there was a dozen or so people in the middle of a orgy.
Then I developed a new outlook on LEO. Most cops are only pricks when they have to be.
