Average number of shots fired per incident?
Does anyone, leo or otherwise, know of any statistics to show how many average shots are fired by either leo or civillians in self defense. The old "8 + 1 is not near enough (example)" argument seems to be ongoing forever. Yes, I know it's personal preference to carry a lot of ammo or not, but I am jsut wondering in real world instances if is rare that a ccw holder would need to fire more than say 9 rounds. I also know it's really rare for one to need to pull his gun at all, but I'm jsut curious.
This has nothing at all to do with whethere there should be high cap magazines, but for instance someone that says it's better to carry .40 than .45 because there are normally more rounds in the same model gun.

Last I heard, it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 to 5 rounds.

I don't know the average but my buddy had to shoot and kill a bad guy and he fired off four shots. One doesn't count his shots during a situation that requires deadly force. With that said I feel that a person should train on shot placement rather than worry about enough ammo. If you use a Walther P22 with 60g bullets that can kill as good as a XD45, depending where you put your round. Although I just saw the Taurus Judge 45/410, one shot of 410 in the face may just do it. Good training in emergency and tactical magazine changes would make you better shooter.
