Too Old

How old is too old to become an officer? I'm kind of at a place to change career options. I'm 34 is it too old to start a LE career?

I would say that it depends on some things. If it's something you want to do, and have a passion for it, don't let anything anyone says here stop you from it.

I would look at your physical condition. Do you think you could hold up with the demands of the job? Stuff like this are just things to think about.

If you are up for it, I say go for it. I am not an LEO by the way.

Matt

A cop i rode with in AZ was 40 something, and he had just been on the job for 1 year.

For some agencies maybe, for others not at all. I personally don't think so.

it all depends what state your in, some states have laws on age requirements, and mandatory retirement age, so if your older upon hiring you may not get 20 years for a pension in some states, check the laws in your state. we dont hire anyone over 35

went through the Academy 15 yrs ago with a sponsored guy who was 35 and a gal what was 34. Started with 36 cadets and graduated 11, they both made it and had what it takes. If you have the desire, skills and endurance go for it, you'll be an asset to any force. Maturity and knowledge speaks volumes over youth, but just remember you'll be hopping fences to chase people half your age.

I'm sure if you look around someone will put you to work. Good luck

36 isn't too old, but it depends on what kind of shape you're in. If you've let yourself go, drank lots of beer and have one of those "dunlaps" (you know, where your belly done lapped over your belt!), smoked 2 packs a day....you get the drift.

I started my career a few years after the service - about 26 years old. The guys I went to acamady with were in their early 20's, but there were a few "pops" mixed in that were in their 30's. Age didn't seem to be a factor in pass/fail - the younger ones washed out a lot quicker than the older guys.

Good luck with this.....
