Not that I'd have any interest in starting a late-life career in l.e., but I'm in better physical shape than most of the s.d. and p.d. guys in my little town. Can also shoot better than most, if not all, of them.

In our area, the cutoff is 35 years old, which is stupid. Too be honest, I think 21 is too young to be a cop. When I was 21, I did not have the wisdom I do now. I don't think there should be a cut off, as long as one can do the job (physically, emotionally, etc).

I can't tell if this is off topic or not but having mentioned the shape of officers on the force...
I have noticed a number of police in my area who are not in, what I would call, great physical shape. I know in the military if you start to gain too much weight when you aren't deployed they have their methods for getting you back in shape. Is this the case in most police departments? Do they have regular PT tests etc? Just curious. |

recently graduated from the academy (8 months ago). We had a class of 73 and two guys there were 41 years old. One of them was asolutely unbelievable. This guy PT-ed with the best of them. Hardest pushing individual I ever worked with. Granted he's no longer on the job, he passed his bar.

If I remember correctly the age cutoff in NJ is 35. But if you have Military time they will deduct so many years. I forget exactly what the numbers are.

I don't know your personal work ethics, but when I was 34, I had 11 years seniority on my PD. At that time I worked a one-man car, two-man car and the wagon in an inner city precinct. I don't recall any problems because of my age. Then again, I stay in shape...no donuts, no coffee and no smoking. Many younger officers are fat, lazy and look like s*** in uniform. You can do the job. You just won't catch many runners on foot. Let the young twenty year olds do the running. Actually, the key will be after you graduate from the academy. You'll definately be in great physical shape, but driving for hours can add weight under your duty belt. And yes, some cops do not eat donuts.

I'll be 43 when I go sworn after the academy.
I think it depends on how good of shape you're in (or are willing to get yourself into) and how sharp your mind still is. I thought I was still the bad-ass SRT guy I was 20 years ago, until I started trying to run 8min miles with the 21 year old guys...sheesh! That was a rude awakening. A 40 year old has to be a near athelete in order to keep up with the 20 year old slackers. If you really want it, you can get it, but you'd better be very disciplined if you want to make it! |
