Can someone explain?

This fall we had a breakin at the range house at our rifle range. This is a cinder block structure about 12'X12' totally open with some cabinets table chairs etc. no interior walls or places to hide. Just one open room/officer on arrival got out his AR. We had already looked inside. He didn't ask, just went in with his AR It would seem to me in such a small place reaction time with his pistol would have been better if there had been someone still in there. Why not a pistol or shotty?

Sounds like he just wanted some action

I know rifles give you better accuracy for when you need to take a headshot in a hostage situation or something. Shotties have too much collateral damage potential. I'd rather have a rifle over a pistol any day. They say the pistol is there to help you fight your way to a long gun. There has to be a reason for that.

EDIT: I just realized this was posted in the LEO section... sorry. Disregard my input.

could have thought rifles were stolen and maybe suspect could have been outside if not inside.

That was not an issue. there are no guns or ammo stored there and he knew that. There were four of us that got there before the LEO did. We were all armed with rifles as that is what we came to do. All of us are known to the LEO and known excelent shots. Two were retired military. If I were a bad guy lurking about I would have been headed over the hill. This is a small town range. Everyone knows everyone especially the gun people.

why go in with a pistol or a shotty if the AR is what you are comfortable with?

Comfort?

If this LEO is not comfortable with his pistol, I don't want him on my police force.

the situation dictates tactics, first problem is, a room, building etc is never cleared alone by an LEO, thats laziness or "nothing happens around here" syndrome, and thats how cops get killed, although we've probably all done it before, but its wrong and unsafe, we're not talking about an active shooter, just a room clearing........second, for the most part a pistol is a defensive weapon, if a rifle is available, use it, unless he was trying to clear a room with a full size AR-15, then the pistol is a better option, a full size rifle is too long, but an M-4 or MP-5 is the optimum room clearing weapon.......
