Need LEO help w/exchanging duty weapons

Well here is the deal. My department for some reason in 99 decided that the duty weapon of choice would be the Beretta 96 40 cal. My chief is hell bent on these weapons but most if not all of the department would like to see a different weapon come into play. What I am thinking about doing is writing a proposal to my Chief and the City Administrator stating some information about the differences between say the Beretta and the XD, GLOCK, M&P, which ever doesnt matter. I am wondering if any LEOs have any experience in this and can help me take this HUGE challenge on. Also does anyone know any companies that would be willing to buy these guns and either exchange them or pay us and then get a good deal on 9 new guns. I know the chances of an even trade are slim to none. Any help or advice would be great. We have 9 Beretta's with 3 magazines each. They maybe have between 1000 and 1500 rounds through each. Most have a Hogue Grip. God I hate these heavy ass, things.

I doubt if Glock would expend a lot of resources for a 9-gun sale, but they do have a trade-in program and great prices for l.e. agencies.

some chiefs and city admin people are sometimes stuck in their ways about things like this, if they arent going to allow each officer to buy and carry what they want (which I can understand the arguement in small departments) you need to find out the reason why? many places want a double/single firearm or even a DAO. If that is the reason, and they are firm on this, its not going to matter what you write, say or propose. And if its a new officer bringing the issue up and not a veteran range officer etc, its not going to go well probably.

and sometimes the grass isnt always greener on the other side, if it was me, I'd rather keep the .40 96 than get either of the pistols you mentioned.........any Glock or any S&W, but then again, I like beretta

I would love to ditch my Glock 22 to carry my P229, but it will be a very cold day in hell before that even happens, we are told that if we ever shoot somebody, on duty or off, it would be best if we used a department gun. if I ever find a department near me that I like that will let me carry what I want then I will hop on board. but right now im too new to do something like that, i need some more experience first.

We're in the process of researching between the Glock, Sigarms and the XD. If you have a high speed connection and want a HUGE download, PM me. I have a 56K dial-up, so it could take some time...

our dep't did the same thing, had to decide between the xd and glock. glock guaranteed a quicker turnaround in repair than xd did (can't remember the numbers) and glock also gave a much better price. damnit.

I don't know if you can do this or not, but could you consider trying to sell the pitch that officers could buy an optional service weapon? The Dept gets to keep their berettas and can give you one as a duty weapon, but the officers can purchase their own from a dept approved list.

Only reason I was thinking in this arena is the dept, city etc may be more apt to play nice if they know it isn't going to cost them anything. Almighty dollar at work

There are several departments that will go this route with off-duty or back-up weapons as long as you qualify with them, but if a department issues a standardized service handgun, that's going to be what they want you to carry in uniform. The reason for this is uniformity of training and department liability. The department is liable for sufficient training in the use and operation of the issued firearms as well as periodic maintenance, inspection, and repair of departmental equipment.

carry one and you will see why he hates it, they are heavy. I had to tote one of those damn things around when i was in the academy.. they were not able to fire though, they filled the barrels with lead and the take down was spot welded. ironic thing is they issue us glocks, we practiced with glocks, but made us lug around a heavy ass pistol to get us used to the weight, and we had 3 mile runs with a gun belt on, ahhh the good 'ole days..
