Coffee House Shooting in San Diego. Video Released

Pick the gunman in this photo:

Senario Summary:
You're out at high end desert/coffee house after a nice dinner with another couple in a fairly decent part of town. Wierd guy with a backpack is listening to your conversation while standing a few feet from your table near the counter. You call him out on it and he acts offended and a little hostile. An employee overhearing this imeadiately escorts the non-customer/weird guy out the door.

What is your state of readiness going to be for the next five minutes?

a) Yellow: Keep and eye out for the guy?
b) Orange: Run through your tactical plans?
c) Red: Tactical Plan set, Tactical positioning & weapon ready.

If you picked "c", you might have survived this situation!
Perp walks back in the coffee house 5 min. later in a bee line for the table. Shoots husband #1 in the head, shoots husband #2 in the chest and walks back out.

Video on this link shows 30 seconds of the initial confrontation, aperently showing the entire first contact. Not the kind of confrontation you'd expect to result in a returning gunman! They've ID'd the guy and the hunt is on! Keep and eye out!

Too bad concealed weapons are not allowed in most of Cali. Situation c would not be on the list for most of those people. I think getting away would be much better.

I don't consider myself to be a confrontational person, but you bet your ass that if it were me in that situation, and I were legally armed, I'd be in condition red all the way. This would be an extremely hard situation to defend against, though...the gunman walked back in after waiting for those two men to let their guard down, and within a span of probably no more than ten seconds from initial contact to exit (estimating, of course), killed both of them without warning.

Even if both of them were armed as well, they would have to have been paying ABSOLUTE attention (condition red) and readied their weapons as soon as he re-entered the building, or I seriously doubt that they would've had time to react accordingly. I can visualize what happened here...not a good situation from a tactical standpoint. Any standpoint, for that matter.

Very sad loss of life, my condolences to the families of those men. This is why I carry +1 in the hole. You never, NEVER know.

The spookiest thing is that this didn't seem intense enough to set off any warning bells although you can't hear what is being said.

Given how short the distance is from that front door to where it looks like they were sitting it would be a miracle to be able to see him come back in, realize he is carrying, drop my dessert fork, draw and engage before he at least got a couple rounds off.

This is just sickening.

Always assume the worst case I guess. Hand in pocket = gun. Confrontation = desire to kill.

Seeing as how we don't know the whole story of what happened and what was said so it would not be fair to say what we would have done. I know if it was me I would just say, "Come on honey we are leaving!" Just leave, change the situation and you may take away the advantage the BG has. Like you being unarmed in Kalifornia. Plus who wants to explain to the other families why your bullets hit their loved ones in the background? Not saying anyone would miss just that people get tunnel vision and see only the BG. Considering I have hit No-shoots from 20ft I don't think setting of a gunfight in this compact coffe shop would be a good idea.

That's a common argument for gun control, actually. It's not an invalid one. Where does your right to defend yourself end? How many bystanders can we afford to just chalk up as unforunate casualties to save one person? It's just one reason that my knife goes with me to many more places than my gun ever will. No matter what you're carrying, if you're caught off guard or if you use it irresponsibly, you're in trouble. Hopefully evil won't find me or anyone here.

It also goes to show how unprepared people can be. How many of us would even think there was a madman in our midst? I like being slightly paranoid and the idea of just leaving when something odd like this happens.

I always leave if the scene is ugly. Period. Ugly things happen when you stay in ugly places. Learned this in my mispent youth but luckily, as they say in the Adams Family movie, "an indictment is not a conviction".

Glad to see the wisdom of young pups like KOL.

It is actually the wisdom of much Older men that I have learned and used on more than one occasion. I have seen similar BG being weird in public places and I just didn't like it. Clint Smith has several regular articles in different gun rags and he is one of the better tactical/self defence kind of guys. I hope to take some of his classes one day. I do have access to one of his students at www.alaskatactical.com where I have recieved most of my training. I have also been recording the new show on The Outdoor channel called Person Deffence TV. Very good show! Instructors from Valhala training center, Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch, Gunsite, Mas Ayoob from the Leathal Force institute give us a lot of good insight and a look at the training that could have saved these people's lives. Get training don't count on your skill at USPSA or IDPA to save you. Good sound combat tactics can say leave as well as shoot. Also wouldn't you rather fight with a truck or car than with a gun?
