Right-handed shooter - what side should ASP be placed?

I've worked unarmed security/non-bonded PD for the last 3 or 4 years, but I've finally got a job that will allow me to carry a duty firearm, OC, and an Asp. I'm going through my duty rig trying to figure out where to place all of the new additions, but mainly the Asp.

I'm a right handed shooter, so it seems logical to have the baton either in front of my firearm, behind it, or in a crossdraw setup immediately to the left of my buckle to keep it accessible to my right hand.

For those of you that are right handed and carry an asp/autolock/etc., what location do you typically use?

I've been carrying an ASP for 10 yrs. now, and I have it set up behind my gun on the right side of my gunbelt. I'm right handed also, & it allows me to draw the ASP with my strong hand to deploy it.

There are alot of Officers in my Dept. who prefer to cross draw it from the front left of the gunbelt. Whatever feels comfortable to you is the main thing.

I also have to place atleast one or two belt keepers between the ASP and my gun, so the ASP doesn't slide up between the gun handle & my body, preventing a draw with my gun.

It's basically a useless piece of equipment for me, only once in 10 yrs. did I have to deploy it on someone. Everyother time, it was used to break through windows on locked cars or houses

Thanks MGD. I have a feeling that it will be pretty useless for me, too...but alas, my deparment requires that we carry it. I'm pretty sure that it will be used primarily as a window breaker for me as well.

I'll have to try out a couple different variations...the key thing for me is keeping both the Asp as well as my mag pouches acessible for easy reloads. Thats what I'm trying to balance. Just from going over it in my head, I think the best layout would be similar to yours...baton behind my firearm in a sidebreak scabbard, and my mag pouch on the left side of my belt (mags horizontal, opening to the left) so that I can pop the case open with my left hand and reload quickly.

I guess I just need to try out a couple different setups and see what works the best. Thanks for the tip about the belt keepers though, I'll have to remember that.

+1 on this - I carry mine behind the holster on the right side, between the cuff case and the pistol. Know some who like a cross draw - but it's a matter of how you train to use it.

I've used it for crowd control - IMO, there's no better tool for that.

I would have to say the majority of my advisors would carry theirs on the weak-hand side, therefore cross drawing. Go to your local police supply store and ask for this video, I am not sure of the name, but I can describe it. A police officer made this video to show where and how to place your cases, ASP, and such on your duty belt. And, then he shows you how to quickly utilize your equipment from that location.

I know its available here in Vegas, but not sure if anywhere else. I believe the officer works for LVMPD, but don't quote me.

I've always carried my baton on my weak side so that I can deloy it with either hand. Also, the BGs have learned what the sound of an ASP opening is (much like racking your 870) and it is a great intimidator.

Myself and my Sgt. both carry our ASP's on the front right side infront of our gun. We both have the asp holder that swivels which when you sit down it turns at an angle so it doesnt dig into your leg or side. Mine usually cants back at an angle and hits the edge of my holster. When I get out of my car it is clicked up one notch which still leaves it at an angle for ease of draw but does not interfere with my draw of weapon if needed. I have not had an issue yet with it. I am a permanent night shift officer and carry 2 sets of cuffs and dont seem to have any room to put it behind my gun. Just my .02 cents dont know if this is wrong or right but have had no issues with this setup.

I carry mine on my right side behind my holster. My Pepper Spray is in front of my holster. I keep anything that someone might grab and use against me on my strong side. We were taught to use the "interview" stance where you're turned at a 45 degree angle to whomever you're interacting with to minimize any possible weapon grabs.

That is understandable, I personally don't do it that way, but that is the common way that it is taught. two things here, when your "bladed" side to BG, its awfuly easy for him to get behind you, which is the best place to launch an attack, back is best, sides are second best front is the most difficult. I stand head on, weight forward in a good aggressive forward stance, just like I shoot.......second, preventing the "gun grab" by keeping the firearm away from the BG (person your dealing with) is "normal" thinking, just as its taught that if the pistol is grabbed, you should jam your hand down on the pistol and/or over the BG hand to keep the pistol in place.......then your in a struggle, possibly for your life, with someone who may be stronger and highly motivated which sucks...I went along with that line of thinking until I received some fantastic training quite some time ago, now think about this (because these turds are practicing in prison as we speak), if a BG reaches for your pistol, that means his arms (at least one) is extended down towards your holster or otherwise occupied, which is leaving his head-throat open for a blistering, high speed, extremely violent attack by you........if a gun grab or an attempt to disarm you is launched, don't go defensive at that time---thats the time to aggresively ATTACK and don't stop until the fkr is in the ambulance. (and charged with numerous felonies)
