I carry my duty pistol (XD 40 service) in condition 1 all the time - never even considered carrying it any other way. I carried a Ruger P97DC last week - same way - round up, full mag in the well. When I was a street LEO, I always carried my duty gun in condition 1. Why, in the name of all that's holy, would you carry any other way? Even in the days when I carried a S&W Model 10, it was in condition 1. Of course, with a revolver, you can leave the hammer on an empty chamber - but that gives you one less round....depending on the gun, it may/may not be the way you want to go.
In the heat of the moment, you won't think to rack a round up and you'll stand there like some DUMB A*S with a pistol that won't fire.

I would argue that, by not carrying his service weapon in condition 3, the officer saved his own life.

I prefer to carry in Condition 4. That’s the gun loaded, one in chamber and bayonet attached…..LOLOLOLOL
Same here guys, why would you carry without one in the chamber if you’re using it for Duty or Protection.

So as "the story goes" the poster over on GlockTalk writes: "The interesting part is that just prior to firing my first round, and while I was firing additional rounds I distinctly saw the suspect squeezing the trigger of his glock."
I've read this exact post on 3 other handgun forums and it seems to me it's only an attempt to discuss and flame over Condition 1, 2, 3, or 4 and why it is "stupid" not to carry your firearm in any other condition other than Condition 1 (round in the chamber, cocked and locked). What humors me about this entire post is two things right off the bat. One, if someone is "firing additional rounds" at a BG, who in their right mind is going to be distinctly looking at the trigger of the gun of the BG? And second, if the Glock did not have a round in the chamber there likely would not have been any trigger travel for the GG to distinctly see being squeezed. I only make mention of these odd facts because, IMHO, this entire scenario is make believe and was only posted in an attempt to stir the pot some more about which is the best condition to carry a handgun. Comments like stupid is as stupid does no doubt are what the original poster was hoping for. As for me, sharing my thoughts and opinions on the topic...forget it. |

With the XD and most other modern semi's, there's no reason not to carry with one up and a full mag - as long as you have the right duty holster (at a minimum containment level 2 or better). Now, would I stick a Glock with one up and a full mag in my belt? Not likely.
