glad to hear the career choice. ultimately depends on the dept. you background and why you want the field are more important. Like Hacker15, its a field you have to want to do it. Being in the military can give you a sense of what it would take but its quite different in so many ways.

I love tattoos but have refrained from getting any in more public parts of my body. You can always simply wear long sleeved uniforms year round if it is a problem at whatever agency you decide to work with. I know of one of my Lt's that has a big tat on his forearm.

well I just walked down the same road a few years ago. Active duty AF, went to the desert and iraq, got out and am now a PO.
I would say your tats are the least of your worries right now. It all depends on the dept. In our case you can have a whole body tattoo, and you get to wear full sleeves on duty (vegas... in June.... not cool) In my dept's case, you go to the academy for 6 months, then field training for another 4, then you will probably go to graveyard in the ghetto for a year. Oh yeah, you are on probation for two years so don't do anything minor cause they can fire you easily. This is hard on a marriage... especially if it is a lil rocky right off the bat. This is a different world than the military bro. In some ways good, in some ways bad. The down side is this job will change you. I figured because of my military time it would not be as significant of a change than your averge joe citizen walking off the street. The "I was in the military, first wave into Iraq, got shot at, know what a mortar round sounds like" kind of thinking. But, that being said... this will change you. This job is a different kind of danger. I am not trying to talk you out of it. I love my career and there is a lot of pride in what we do. I always missed the military "close-ness" with the people I worked with and you will find a very similar family in the PD. I guess what I am getting at is yes the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.... but the bills are higher. |
