Most LEO/Firefigher/EMT/Hosptial types should have taken the National Incident Management Sytems IS-700 class prior to Oct 06. This includes any agency who may be recieving, or would want to recieve federal funding if their jurisdiction either responds to a national emergency or is the target of a national emergency. There are classes for entry level, management level, elected officials, etc....that are going to be required if your agency is going to get Federal funding. This isn't new folks, this has been going on for over a year. Part of it is a "request" that agencies dispense with 10-codes and go to a plain english radio format. We did it this past summer. The Feds are not making anyone do away with 10-codes, it is just good practice. If you have never been on a dangerous city street (New Orleans post Katrina) with cops from New Jersey, Texas, California,Georgia and Lousisiana all trying to talk to each other you will quickly see why 10 codes have become useless.
here is the NIMS link www.nimsonline.com ETA: Even if YOUR agency isn't directly receiving Federal Funds, someone in your State is. It all goes hand in hand. Last edited by GaLEO; 12-16-2006 at 07:44 PM. |

We use dang few 10-codes in my dept. Eventually we'll be down to 10-4, 10-8 and 10-95.

Sadly the Sheriff's dept that I work for has gone to plain talk. I was trained in Maricopa County Arizona where the 10 code was a must. Sadly I miss it. Espicaly when you have a subject listening to the radio of your partner who forgot to wear his earpiece that day. I agree with a universal 10 code for all departments.

That is why we use 10 codes for anything that may be officer safety related. We don't want the BG to hear that he is "wanted". Other than that, what is a good reason to hang on to the 10 codes? As far as a "universal" or "standard" 10 code sytem, nothing else in law enforcement is universal, even phonetic alphabets change from agency to agency. Do you really think a universal 10 code would work?

The last few seminars I have attended regarding disaster preparedness have included everyone using plain English. Apparently this comes from the federal level and puts everyone on the same page. I just recently transferred from one dept to another and the 10 and signal codes were almost completely different. It was a real ball breaker to learn a whole new set of codes. The trend appears to have been set.

So I'm learning my codes now and I wanted to ask, what study techniques did you all use to learn all the codes? Right now I'm doing flash cards that I made myself.
