LEO's with Issued Rifles

just curious as to how many departments these days are issuing Rifles to patrol...We are issuing refurbished M-16's we got from the Fed's....

If you are allowed to carry one of your own, please also advise...Thanks..

I'm not LE myself but I was talking with a detective with the Lynnwood Police department (washington state) and I think something like 7/8 of the police have ar15s and the rest have something similar (i.e. variety of confiscated rifles and such)

We were issued the M500/870s (our preference) but had to supply our own carbines if we opted to have one. I kept a bushmaster in the trunk.

Hello USM RM3;
we issue m16 to all shift commanders.
if individual officers pass a patrol rifle school, they may carry an AR15 of there own. or check out an m16. they may not get the same rifle each shift though.

Rockville (MD) Police has a limited number of Colt AR-15's. Officers may also attend a patrol carbine school and carry personally owned AR-15's.

Montgomery County (MD) PD has a limited number of surplus M-16's modified to semi-automatic. Gaithersburg (MD) PD has HK G-36's.

Off hand, I know that LAPD, Omaha PD, Denver PD, and Arlington (VA) PD also have patrol carbine programs.

10-4 TO ALL! Thanks for the help, I am trying to obtain a few other PD's and SO's that are carrying Rifles. I have met with some resitance from a couple of elected officals...They are worried about over-penetration..etc etc...

I just purchased a case of the Hornady "TAP" .223's....They should silence the overpentration argument........

Thanks again to all....

Tom

Tom, I would refer you to the Illinois Tactical Officers Association (www.itoa.org). Their president, Jeff Chudwin, has done a great deal to advance the cause of the patrol rifle in Illinois and across the nation.

Another resource is the National Tactical Officers Association (www.ntoa.org). They have an information package on patrol rifles and a resource manual. You will need to have a NTOA member order the materials for you.

The FBI Ballistics Research Facility in Quantico has a disc available detailing their test results on service loads. You'll need to send a letterhead requested, signed by a sergeant or above, that specifies you will not release the information outside your agency.

Good luck and be safe.

THANKS! I will do that.....I'll have to try and locate a nota member....I think, my fathers department may have a member ot two....I guess the biggest thing is to show my Police Comm, that there are other departments that issue them.....I am a small department and only have two sqauds...I am going to equip both cars with a refurb'ed M-16.....

In another aspect, I was advised by my city attorney's office not to issue the TASERS yet....They want to wait and see how a couple of the law suits come out! SHEESH!, I knew I should have stayed a patrolman! HA HA

If they balk at the .223 for some odd reason, you can fall back to a pistol caliber carbine like the Storms. I know it's not the best but better to have bases covered when dealing with politicians.
