Reserve Police Officer

Okay, what is the deal with reserve police officers? My wife's father was one way back when. What exactly do they do? Are they considered actual LEOs with respect to laws?

Yes!...At our department we have 14 full time Deputies, and about 23 reserves. They have all completed the "470" and are deemed "post Certified". The have to do an 8 hour tour each month to keep their certification in force, and stay up on the continuing education that the dept. and state requires.

Frenchy, did I get you excited there? I did not even know you were an LEO.

Okay, what is the "470". I assume it is the certification test that the LEO needs. Is the class work and testing the same as a full time LEO?

Also, other than their 8 hour tour, what is the standard role of the officer? Nothing until something requires police presence? Do the reserves have full time jobs other than reserve LEO?

The reason that I ask this (did you see this coming ) is that because of the new federal law stating that LEOs can CCW regardless of state law, it would be one sure way to get a CCW here in CA. Of course, it would also be helping out the community too, which I am more than happy to do.

You know, I was thinking about this the other day. I was wondering because I would be interested in the CCW provision, and I also realized how little I am actually doing with my life (other than the whole education thing) right now. I'd be possibly interested in this.

Most organization's websites will tell you their duty requirements. Check city, county, and state (Hiwy. patrol).

Good luck.

TP. Way back when, I started as a Reserve Officer at age 19. Couldn't be hired as a regular till age 21. Had to complete the same academy as the regular officers, then received State Certification. There was a minimum monthly duty requirement (hours) and was UNPAID service, but the department covered your insurance and provided two uniforms. All other gear was at your expense. Some departments have paid reserves. Same standards of conduct, and dress/appearance applied. Unfortunately, Uncle Sam requested my body before I turned 21.

MrTuffPaws, The first question they ask you when applying for reserve duty is if you've ever taken a picture of yourself holding a gun to your head.

Each state is different. If your still in California you should find answers to all questions at the link below. In most cases Reserves in Calfornia only have Police powers when they are in uniform (on-duty). This means they can not carry off duty without a CCW.
