What's funny is when you guys get out of the academy. Get on the graveyard shift. Then fight to handcuff your first DWI. You'll probably puke after it's all over and never show any signs of actually passing an agility test.

Thanks Jim! Well, I am a rookie Sergeant (promoted in July) and now pushing papers across a desk. But, we sure woulda had some fun when I was back on the streets. You cant beat that job, folks! The friendships and brotherhood you build with your fellow officers is remarkable. (I mean, you are trusting your life with these guys! That goes a long way.)

man Tucan i wish it was that easy for me. I've been trying to get into the Fire Dept. here for 3 years now. i keep passing all the tests and the chief keeps cutting me. the system here is so political its demoralizing. they don't even do the oral interview until they offer you the job a friend of mine went out to AZ to do the protect and serve thing and got on in less then 6 mo. mabye i should do the same.

I knew a guy who was a 15-year EMT vet in another state, came to Az, took all the classes, got his Az EMT cert, and applied to the local FD. Guess what? Rookie newbies got the job? Why? In this town, you gotta know people.

I'm not sure if its that way with the PD anymore, but it used to be. Enough guys got thrown off the force for accepting drugs as bribes, that the dept finally had such a large hole they had no choice but to pick up any local talent that was vaguely interested.

Inceidentally, I just got a note in the mail today, telling me that I failed my background check. Right now I'm trying to figure out why.

Dont bother, Tuc. They wont tell you. So sorry to hear about it, but at least you got a plan to fall back on. Good luck in your future position.

It matters how deep they check your background. My dept is one of the 5th largest in the nation and they contacted EVERYBODY who ever knew me, known me, or even thought about knowing me! My neighbors were getting nervous because investigators were showing up at their homes asking about me. I would imagine a smaller dept would not go thru such lengths.

I passed the Border Patrol Oral Interview today, and we talked about the "stupid things" I did as a youngster. Hopefully the Federal BG check goes through, or at least takes into consideration that the officers there today passed me despite my youthful stupidity.
