any san antonio LEO's here or former, or any LEO's can help
i am going to apply this week for sapd but have a few questions/concerns. first, is there a height/weight requirement? im about 5'4" and weigh around 103ish.
if i make it, will i still need to take a concealed carry course on my own, or will that be taken care of. i want to do this soon, but if its part of the course, ill wait to see what happens. im very fit physically, but any strength requirements? i can bench well over my body weight. will i be "discriminated" upon by other officers or by hooligans? i expect some from both groups, but will it be bad enough to where i will want to quit. thanks for the help. i also have bad credit, will this hurt to where i will be disqualified?

Your biggest hurdle is the credit issue. Many PDs look at the applicants ability to handle their own personal obligations as an indicator of how they will handle bigger responsiblities. If you have made the effort to fix your credit then that will help. If not, do so. Hazing is par for the course. You will definately recieve some as cops are notorious for it. However, none of it should be any more than teasing and pranks. There is no need to take a concealed carry course as a cop. You can apply for the Texas CCW after the academy with a letter from the chief or his designee stating that you are current with qualification and a fee of $25 I believe. Your credentials and badge will allow you carry many places that you cannot as a CCW holder. The only benefit of a CCW is that it streamlines the process of buying a handgun a bit. Not much more, but a little. Hope this helps, and good luck.

What he said about credit and hazing (the latter of course violates most dept.s' policy).
I can't answer your height/weight question as I'm from Calif., but I can believe your small stature will probably affect the performance of your job if you are ultimatley hired. Some people of your size have the little man's complex and go overboard to try and screw with the biggest guy they can find to prove something. That can end up in a good beating, if not worse. Others have the common sense to realize their physical limitations and use their brains to de-escalate a situation, which sometimes results in compliance. Sometimes tho, the bad guy, facing a small guy/girl leo is going to do what he will do, notwithstanding all the verbal judo being applied by the leo. In that situation, without backup (which can occur quite frequently), the leo may get hurt and possibly killed. If the same situation existed and the leo was bigger, the bad guy might have second thoughts as to attacking the leo. You might consider it a hit and miss situation, but I sure would not want to be on the hit side of that situation if I was built like you. I'm 6'/200lbs and tho not a giant, a respectable size. I believe my size factored in often when a bad guy was deciding whether he wanted to take a chance and not go along with the program; whether I was in a custody or patrol setting (as I worked for a sheriff's dept., I did both during my career). That's my $.02 and I wish you good luck. |
