What is the age limit to become a Sheriff Deputy

I was laid off after 37 years as a NASA contractor.
Saw an add for a Deputy Sheriff and applied.
I am 56 years old and weigh 192-195lbs, 6'2" tall.
Still in pretty good shape, is there a physical fitness test?
The add states, deliver summons and help with traffic control, it didn't mention anything about riding in Police cars and catching bad guys, not that I would have a problem with that.

thanks
dan

Why not call the department you're applying to?

Age Limits May Depend Upon The Hiring Agency

The big question is....are you mentally and physically prepared for the job? We had a 62 year old gentleman who still drove fire engines for a living. Great guy! My understanding was that he was in such excellent physical shape they (the brass) invited him to PT train the recruits at the fire academy. But, they really wanted him to retire JUST because of his age and he finally did.

Also consider the type of retirement system the hiring agency may have. Sometimes they have a maximum hiring age for no other reason that the older recruit may not be able to get his 30 years in before retiring. In your case, you would be very old indeed. Maybe you can get hired on just a cash basis with no benefits? How about as a civilian with the agency? HB of CJ (old retired FF PM)

All our Orders just say 18+ for sworn officer and age brackets for the Cooper test go to 60+. So I'm sure it is possible but the likelyhood of hitting patrol any time soon is slim. If you are hired would probably be for jail staffing, civil section, or possibly court services. It would be up to the respective agency just call and find out.

What age to become a deputy sheriff

I retired from a police department after working there for 32 years. Most agencies may not post a maximum age because of potential of lawsuits filed for denial of due process to apply for that job. In reality, you must be able to enter and complete the academy required from that agency. Most police academies will gear their physical training to be similar to that of the military, so expect running, climbing over walls, chin ups, push up and other physical and mental tests to be completed.

A process server would be a civilian position and as such there is no academy to complete but you would not be a sworn deputy sheriff (i.e. much lower pay, lower benefits, etc).

Thanks for all the reply's, I'm just out of work and I'm willing to do anything in order to keep my house.
Working PT or even FT @ 10 an hour won't cut it. I'm trying to get on board with a small company making 15 an hour, but that will barely allow me to squeak by.

It's hard to accept a job when going from 6 figures to close to minimum wage. I have applied to many corporations and reduced my pay by 30k.

2011 sucks for my family, got laid off, had to put my parents in assisted living, had to take most of their possessions to the dump and now my wife's mother won't live thru this weekend. My daughter hit a deer with the car, my son ran over a deer that was hit by a truck, both cars need repairs.

Can't even get hired working in a warehouse.

Hang in there, friend. Rely on family and on whatever god you believe in.

I constantly remind myself whenever going through a trial that, generally, all things turn out for my good.

Keep yourself in good spirits, friend. Remember what you're fighting for and fight to find a job just as you would fight to save your life or family.
