I'm currently going to a local community college pursuing my Associate's Deg. in Criminal Justice. This coming semester I'm seriously considering signing up for BLET. I'm just worried about the load it will put on me. I work 8 hours a day and the classes will be from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. 4 days a week. Plus the training lasts 9 months. Have any of you worked a full time job and did the training at the same time?

I would like to know what all is involved in the training process and what to expect.

I did that very thing. I worked all week long and went to BLET in Lexington, NC four nights a week for six months.

Night BLET is Mon.-Thurs 6p to 10p and Saturday from 8a-5p. There are two weekends (Sat and Sun both) spent on defensive driving. I believe NC Training and Standards requires 40 hours of the driving course.

Your school may change the way the modules are taught, but the overall course varies very little. When I went through, the course was 620 hours long. It may be longer now and I think the PT course has changed some.

Oh and, sometime during that 6p to 10p class, you have to work in an hour of PT each night!

Wow HPPD 648, that is even sounds difficult, in Illinois I just had to go for 12 weeks of training, the department paid your salary while you were there....

In NC, you can attend as an employee of the department. Your duty assignment would be the BLET class. You draw a paycheck and earn your benefits such as vaction and sick time, etc. Upon graduation, you're then sworn in and start field training.

Or you can do it the way I did. I was sponsored by a department, a requirement to attend if you're not an employee. This just means a designated rep of the department says you're not a criminal and are of good moral character. Aside from the cost of books and PT uniforms, the BLET class is free. The sponsoring department is under no obligation to hire you, though mine did.

If you can't get hired by a department and have them send you to school, it makes the job search easier when you apply for a sworn position and already have BLET certification. It's cheaper for the hiring agency and makes you more attractive as an applicant.
