Some questions for leo
Are there any jobs that you don't have to be a uniformed officer to do? Like homicide or something a couple of my friends started arguing about it and it peaked my interest. thanks guys.

We have a process server (serves civil and criminal summons') that isn't sworn or uniformed. He does get a cruiser to drive, but just goes out in regular khakis or jeans. He's an awesome guy, but not the most professional in the world.

As far as I know, in order to get to be a plainclothes officer, you have to be a uniformed officer first. At least that's howw it is around here.

At some of the bigger departments, they might have civilian crime scene people...but nothing like what you are asking.

My former (I hate using that word, especially since I've seen the new 26-46% contract they just obtained) dept. uses civilians in the crime lab, but a sgt and lt. are the supervisors.
Even the civilians who work in the jails are uniformed, whether it be custody assistants, who work with the inmates or nurses, who treat them. Even the maintence guys wear them. As far as actual police duties go, you have to be a sworn deputy on this dept. |

I do SAR for my county, all civilian with LEO head, and LEO coordinators, but they'll pull us out to do crime scenes and search for evidence every once in awhile. Among other things... Our ME's are usually plain clothes, along with the detectives.
