Eric. I'm sure you'll be fine with either one. It's only temporary.
Bill. I'm not insulted by your advice at all. A local cop told me that I can go to deskjob and do computer work after 3 years on patrol. Is this true retired? Thanks for all the advice I appreciate it.

interesting read. I too was in IT. I got laid off and never looked back. I make 30% less and no bennies but I couldn't be happier.
Besides when your in IT you can never go to anyone house without getting they "hey would you look at"... I've always thought being a cop would be cool. I don't think I could handle going to the same calls over and over again. I think I'd get jaded pretty fast.

Boma, on my former dept. there are approximately 600 different positions available. There is no "computer" position per se that I'm aware of. There are detective units like computer fraud, for example wherein the detective has to have a good working knowledge of the computer; your backround would be helpful.
There is no guarantee however, at least on my former dept., that you will get such a position after 3 yrs. patrol. Other depts. may vary. The patrol deputies who make the arrests, are a good street cop and usually have been a FTO, are the ones who are more readily able to obtain the choicer spots. Of course, you will those who have no qualification other than who they know get the same ones. But that's true anywhere. I would say your computer experience would help you immensely if you were a good street cop first. |
